SP2 Installation

#1 Post by Leon » Wed Sep 08, 2004 10:40 pm

Have you done it? Was it successful? Will you do it? Can you/have you backed it out? (Has anyone successfully backed it out)?

Fresh install of SP2. No problem here except boot time is longer.

The decision of whether or not to install SP2 will eventually be taken out of our hands.

Isn't it great to have Big Brother watching out for us?

Linux, here I come.

Ditto (fresh install on my new 7K60) except that there's a noticeably quicker boot - but that may possibly be due to the 7K60 or it's 8M of cache - I had the 1Gb of RAM before changing HD so I don't see that making a difference.

I've installed SP2 on my T40 and my homebuilt Athlon/nForce2 midtower. I had no problems with either install.
Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!

That article was confusing. It said (1) Originally, the tools were set to postpone delivery via Windows Update/Automatic Update for 120 days, starting August 16. But on September 7, Microsoft extended this deadline to 240 days, or eight months, from August 16.

And then immediately after it said (2) As a result, Microsoft will now begin pushing SP2 to all Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1 customers automatically via Windows Update and Automatic Update.

So which is correct? Is it deferrable for 8 months or not?

Doesn't really matter because you can turn Auto Update off, and it won't download if you don't want to install it.

I downloaded SP2 on the day it was available in August, applied it to my T41 where it worked fine and continues to work fine (with a small exception). Then I applied it to my NetVista A30 desktop where it works fine (no exceptions). I have posted several times that I am happy with SP2.

Now I noticed on my T41 that the paging file had gone to 1150Mb, and I could not change it to anything else. I normally set it for a minimum of 288Mb and a maximum of 640Mb. Since I have 768Mb of ram, it stayed at 288Mb. With SP2, it went to the maximum recommended value. On the NetVista A30, I set it the same way (same 768Mb of ram), and it stayed at 288Mb even after SP2.

I have another hard drive that I am slowly setting up as my production drive with Office 2003, and when I put SP2 on it, the same issue with the paging drive occured.

So tonight I got around to calling IBM, expecting a fix or the announcement of a fix to come.

Their considered, wise and highly intellectual response?

"Take service pack 2 off. We do not recommend SP2 on *any* IBM computer. Our PC designs are different. We are working with Microsoft to find a solution. Call back in several weeks to see if we have fixed it."

This will be like Waiting for Godot. (If you missed the reference, Godot never came.)

Words fail me.

jd - interesting response from them, seeing as they've just released a new audio driver (for many Thinkpads) which has a fix allowing support for SP2.

I'm staying away for the time being. I'm behind a hardware firewall at work and am in the middle of figuring out my hardwall firewall at home on my wireless router. Also have PC-Cillin 04 internet security installed as my software firewall. In short, I feel reasonably safe.

One of the funniest, IMHO, things I ever saw on a toilet wall was "Back in 5 minutes - Godot"

Sorry, nothing to do with this thread...

No problem here. Wireless seems slower but nothing major. That's about it.

I installed it on my A31p. After rebooting, it afforded me five seconds to admire the login screen, then crashed with a STOP 0x8E event. Gave it another chance, but it did not manage to realize that I wanted it to work, so crashed again. Fortunately, safe mode still worked, so I uninstalled, and have a working computer again. :D

I suppose one of my 60 services or 40 device drivers is having a problem, so if anybody knows of a way to automatically pinpoint that problem, I would be interested in hearing about it.
