2 explorer.exe processes in XP Task Manager

#1 Post by agarza » Tue Jan 02, 2007 7:00 pm

I use Windows XP style menu to access programs, thing is when I click the "My Computer" icon under the Start menu, another explorer.exe process appears on Task Manager consuming 10MB of RAM.
How could I prevent this?

Open up an explorer window, any window, say My Computer

Go to Tools --> Folder Options, click View Tab

Find Launch Folder Windows in a separate Process, uncheck it.

Reboot

Check if condition persists. It should not.

Of course, that is if you really want to disable it. The thing is, if you have to "kill" your Windows file explorer process for whatever reason, having 2 separate processes allows the desktop to keep running and not have to do a restart.

Having just one explorer process running isn't too bad. If you do have to kill Explorer, Windows will re-spawn another explorer process all by itself after a little while.

True, but $5 says the Windows default is disabled :-)
At this point I cannot be really sure about the defaults as I install from highly customized (read: nlited) XP images.
