Drivers and Information for running Vista on Thinkpads

#1 Post by arni » Sun Jan 07, 2007 6:44 am

Since there are quite some threads in the forum with links to drivers for thinkpads running windows vista and information here and there i thought it will be nice to have it all summed up.

So for those of you who are interested in running vista on thinkpads:

1. Drivers and BIOS upgrades
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... BETA-VISTA
Also avaiable from this site: Power Manager, Presentation Director and Productivity Center

And also look at the general support & download page for your specific machine as Lenovo already released some final drivers out of beta.

2. Thinkvantage
Active Protection System http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-67040
Access Connections (thanks to hkelley) http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... TVAN-EAPAC
Rescue & Recovery (thanks to SGD) http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... VAN-EAPRNR
Client Security Solution (thanks to SGD) http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-66953
Fingerprint Software (thanks to SGD) http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-66948

3. Some links which aren't TP specific but maybe interesting when moving/upgrading to vista:
Windows Vista hardware compatibility list https://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/Default.aspx
Windows Vista software compatibility wiki (unoffical) http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/W ... ility_List
Some TP might start slower on vista than other brands laptops MSKB http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929191

If someone finds some other useful information please feel free to continue this thread.

This is really helpful posting, thanks. Lenovo only give info/downloads for T43/p, any information about which of the programs/drivers can also be used for earlier versions of T4x models?

According to the table in http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/microsoft/vist ... ended.html, Lenovo does not consider T42 as "Windows Vista Capable". I would expect that no Lenovo Vista drivers support T42 and earlier models officially. However, you may try to run the drivers for later models.

That's incredibly annoying. When Lenovo was IBM they would release drivers for earlier versions of Windows that came out after the model in question if those models were able to run those OSes... saying that the T42 is not Vista capable seems like a cost-cutting way of avoiding supplying support just because Vista happened to be released *after* the T42. This gets my goat, it really does

I meant "later version of Windows" of course.. incidentally, according to Lenovo themselves:

"Note: A Windows Vista Capable PC includes at least:

* A modern processor (at least 800MHz nominal operational processor frequency for the device)
* 512MB of system memory
* A graphics processor that is DirectX 9 capable."

Since when does the T42 not qualify?

Well, I have something to add here.

My T42 is full vista premiun. According to MS/IBM it don't qualify, but read my review at http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=35978

Just my 3 cents.
Lenovo ThinkPad T60p 8741-A11:
Intel Core 2 Duo T7400 @2.16ghz, 3GB Ram, ATI Mobility FireGL V5250, HD 100gb @7200rpm
Old: ThinkPad T42 2373-M1U

That is very similar to my Thinkpad, also a T42 with the same graphics card and 2GB RAM and Vista Ultimate works great on it. I just don't understand why Lenovo/IBM etc are saying on one hand that it doesn't qualify, while according to their generic criteria (as listed above) it clearly does.
