MS Office 2003 Licensing Question

#1 Post by akhavan » Sun Jan 07, 2007 7:53 am

Hi,

I’m planning to change my ThinkPad from T41P to T60P. On T41P I have MS Office 2003 my question is can I install it on the T60P as well (use it both on T41P and T60P) or do I have to uninstall it from T41P first or worst case to have to buy a new one for the T60P. I like to keep it legal.

You should be able to figure this out easily from either reading the EULA (end user licensing agreement) that came with the software, or by searching the Microsoft website (or calling them, which I've done once or twice when I had a question like this). IF it is an "OEM" version, it can only be on one computer and it may not even be transferable to another even if you remove it from the original machine on which it was installed.

A lot of software CAN legally be installed on two computers as long as they are used in only one household or business by only one person. Photoshop has this sort of a license agreement.

I don't know if your version of Office 2003 fits this description, and since there are several versions of each piece of MS software (OEM, Academic, Retail, etc.) it would be impossible to know without knowing the type. If the software came from your employer, they may have a "site" license which covers all their users and in that case you may be free to install it on as many of your computers as you like as long as no one else uses it; depends on the license.

Thanks Mr. Fox
I'm not in US and there is no number for MS for for me to call where I am now. For what is worth I bought mine retail and I did check MS site but I could not find the answer I was looking for hence posting it here.

Retail version only come with one license unless otherwise stated in the EULA. MS Office 2003 for teachers and students comes with 3 licenses, so you can use that version on three computers. It is intended for non-commercial use, so if you are using it at home, it shouldn't matter. Technically, you must be a student in a k-12 school or College, a teacher at a school or college, or a parent of a student that resides with you in order to use that version legally, but I see most home users pick up that version because it is a lot cheaper and includes all the basic programs (Word, Excel, PwerPoint, and Outlook)

For sure, Office 2003 Pro Full Retail (not teacher or any other special) can be legally installed on two computers. I know because I have checked the licensing and done it.

Less clear is Office 2003 Standard. I would be inclined to try it. My guess is that if you have installed it once only, installing the second time will permit activation.

Thanks guys.

I have Office 2003 Pro Full Retail version unfortunately I do not have the box with me to check the licensing. From jdhurst post it seems I will be OK.

Thanks

I thought it was something like 2 desktops and a laptop. I remember because my father had a copy of XP Pro, and I thought it allowed 2 desktops and a laptop. The idea is that one desktop is at your workplace, one is at your home, and the laptop goes with you.
