Bus Speed

#1 Post by fleamourian » Tue Jan 23, 2007 7:35 pm

Hi

I've been trying, without any success, to make a direct link via cross wire between my IBM T21 laptop & desktop. The only thing I have not tried is checking the bus speed in the BIOS settings. The Network Troubleshooter suggests that most network adaptors run at 8.33Mhz, other then that I am straight out of options. :?:

See:

for details. Anyone know how to check/change bus speed on a T21?

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

What you are trying to do should be possible with just your router/switch and a normal straight-through ethernet cable, assuming that the router has been setup as a DHCP server. Each computer will receive an IP address like you have listed in the referenced post. As long as both computers are setup with the same Workgroup name, you should be able to use Windows Networking to "View Workgroup Computers". You will probably also have to enable shared folders (definitely XP, maybe with Win200K and Win98). You can change/define the workgroup by right-clicking the My Computer icon on the desktop, choose Properties, click on the Computer Name tab, then click the Change button. Specify a common workgroup name, click OK, and let the system re-boot.

Changing "bus speeds" is not necessary even if you try a peer-to-peer connection using a "crossover" ethernet cable. I've never tried to do that with two computers; I simply plug them into my switch and configure them as described above.

rkawakami is pretty much correct on all of this. I do believe you need a router/switch for this to work though. Each computer needs a IP address, Subnet mask, and a default gateway for a network to work, well at least with all of my experience I have had with networks. You should be able to pick up a wired router from you local computer store for pretty cheap since everyone mostly goes for wireless. The router should do most of the work for you, but you will need to setup a workgroup and shared folders to get the networking to work. This stuff is pretty easy to do. Let me know if you need help with any if this.

Cheerz guys

Will note the above. I have had no luck with a direct connection. Will try connecting through my router. Intending to go wireless with laptop. At least sharing internet connection is no problem.
