xp shutdown problem

#1 Post by deodeo » Wed Jan 24, 2007 11:44 am

After updating some drivers and some softwares, my z61t freeze right after startup, showing error on Dr. Watson......

Then, I close the Dr. Watson process, and the machine startup normally now. But, it will hang when the system shuting down. It will stay at "Windows is shutting down" or "windows is standing by" forever.

Anyone know how to solve this shutdown problem? I hate to reinstall the whole system.

Unfortunately, there is no way to see what is causing the hanging. Most likely it is a system process that is refusing to shut down so Windows is taking its sweet time forcing it to quit. It could very well be the Dr. Watson program giving trouble, but I really don't know. I would advise a system restore to before you updated your drivers and see what happens. That should fix it. Then you can try reinstalling your drivers. System Restore is found under "System Tools" in the "Accessories" folder in the start menu.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

A good idea would be to start by looking at the windows event log. Might be some more information there to help you figure out what is causing the problem. Also you could try to uninstall whatever you installed that caused the problem. If you installed several drivers and other software at the same time you might have to try by starting with the one that is most likely to cause the problem. Looking at the event viewer might give you some more information that will help figuring out where the problem is.
