Lenovo has been keeping the exact date secret, but instead has been saying "Why wait until that happens? Just go ahead order now and you'll get a free upgrade disc!", which makes sense from their perspective. Anyway, my guess is it will start within weeks if not days.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

One of the comprehensive things with a ThinkPad is that it may be completely reinstalled by hitting the ThinkVantage button and doing a few steps. Will the upgrade disc also update the hidden partition so that the reinstall gets you to the Windows Vista state, or does the ThinkVantage service still result in Windows XP, or it doesn't work anymore as the new operating system installation has damaged the bootstuff which made the ThinkVantage stuff possible?pianowizard wrote:Lenovo has been keeping the exact date secret, but instead has been saying "Why wait until that happens? upgrade
unless somethings changed in vista, you can usually point the upgrade to some valid disk etc with xp in it so it will let you upgrade. before it even let you put the xp cd in the cd. To me the only way to install an OS is from scratch. When the system comes bundled with the OS then I leave it and remove the things i don't want to run, but running vista since Nov20 i just purchased a 2nd drive and installed it fresh on that. Mine was a full copy from MSDN so it wasn't an issue but i'd find that out. I use Ghost to copy the entire drive and do it weekly which to me is better than reverting back to the start, but just my opinion..

LOL! My concern at the moment is that whenever I get around to making up my mind on what to buy, that I'm not convinced I even want Vista. I wonder whether I shouldn't hurry up and buy now while I can still get XP.pianowizard wrote:Lenovo has been keeping the exact date secret, but instead has been saying "Why wait until that happens? BTW, one problem with taking a free upgrade is that whenever you want to rebuild your PC, you'll have to begin by reinstalling XP, and then from there you'll have to upgrade to Vista. I went through all that for years after I bought a Win 3.11 machine just as Win 95 was coming out. I don't ever want to be in that position again.

Re: upgrade
Things have changed. See the following Slashdot article:johnp126 wrote:unless somethings changed in vista, you can usually point the upgrade to some valid disk etc with xp in it so it will let you upgrade. before it even let you put the xp cd in the cd. Now you'll need to have XP actually installed in order to install Vista, when you've purchased Vista at the upgrade pricing.
