CSS 8.0

#1 Post by rickster » Sun Feb 04, 2007 8:14 pm

I decided to be guinea pig and installed the latest version 8 of CSS, along with a number of other ThinkVantage updates released around the end of January. Presumably, the rush of updates is designed to support Windows Vista.

The good news, IE 7 is now supported for password manager. Finally!

The bad news, the Secure Drive originally set up in my T60 can no longer be accessed. I can still see the file as SecureDrive.vol. It's no big deal, since I have no data saved in it and can delete it without qualms. However, I can see no way of creating a new Secure Drive in CSS 8.
Any advice?

Reading the release notes the support for this feature has been removed.

Here are the changes in 8.0
Summary of changes

The following information provides details of changes that have been made to this version of the software:

* Smart card enrollment and authentication support has been added.
* Improved enrollment and configuration interface.
* PrivateDisk support has been removed.
I think that leaves us on the lookout for alternatives.
www.truecrypt.org sounds promising though.

Any reports on the performance of CSS8, especially fingerprint login? I had to disable CSS7 because it was so slow.

I installed CSS8. Doesn't seem to work with my password manager. The Ctrl+F2 function doesn't come on. Also, I can't load the manager via CSS8.

Uninstall it if you don't need it

Unless you really need CSS, regardless of version, do yourself a favor and uninstall it, forever, refusing all further entreties by the software installer to reinstall it.

You will be glad you did. I promise.

Seriously, what does Client Security Solutions (CSS) offer besides Password Manager (which I currently uses KeePass for that purpose) and disk encryption (which I *think* will be made obsolete by Vista's BitLocker)...?

Tighter integration with Rescue and Recovery (RnR)...?

I'm not being rhetoric but truly want to knows, thinking whether to keep it or not.

I suppose it could be useful in a corporate environment whereas centralized management is important...? But for individual users, is it an overkill...?

Besides, if I use Acronis TrueImage, do you think I need to keep RnR installed...?

Thanks in advance, and have a nice weekend.
