Vista - hotter HDD??

#1 Post by romka » Wed Feb 07, 2007 2:52 am

I can honestly say my palm rest atop the HDD bay feels significantly hotter since installing Vista.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Thanks

That's right and i think it's because of indexing and other tasks vista is doing right after a fresh install.

Mine was getting hot the first days, too. But after a while everything is back to normal.

I've been running vista since early december - so I think it's over the indexing by now... :(

Trouble is, everytime say a 'Defender' security update is downloaded, it re-scans your drive looking for new infections.

Then you have the defragmenter that runs automatically each week in the background.

Then you have the superfetch pre-fetching your data.

Then you have the search indexer which re-indexes say 16GB VMWare images just because you ran VMWare.

Then you have the Volume Shadow Copy running on Vista Ultimate keeping track of historic changes to files - to provide that 'Previous Versions' option and system restore.

etc. etc.

Yes, Vista loves to use your hard disk.

That's before you install a Virus checker etc.

I think that there must be some processes on your computer that constantly cause trashing your hdd. I would suggest to use a tool like process explorer or filemon from sysinternals to look for the processes that actually try to read/write to your disk.

Just like i said. After about 2-3 days working on vista everythings slows down and is working like in xp. I noticed that when on battery the hdd spins up only after a long period of time.

How much ram do you have. Maybe it's just that vista is swapping the hole time?

i have 1.5gb of memory.

i am very select about what i have running at any point in time, and i just have few things - rest is vista only.

i think i'll just disable defender - am sick of this ..
