Vista and external screen resolutions? + problems

#1 Post by TJMacGyver » Wed Feb 07, 2007 5:22 am

I just installed Vista on my T43 2668-46G 1,5gb ram
And it runs smooth! actually more so than XP :) with aero and all the sh*t.

BUT when I installed the new ATI graphics drivers I can't use the resolution that I normaly use for my external display (a 24" inch sony widescreen CRT) which is 1600x1024@85hz

And the max is now 1600x1200@75hz which is much lower than my screen can handle
and I won't just revert because the old ones are very poor, flickering screen and very slow.

Does anyone have an idea how I can get back the resolution i wan't?

Another thing: As presentation director doesn't work I have to use "Display settings" to change the settings, It's not as easy as setting up a profile, but I can live with that for now. BUT it won't let set my external monitor as main. When I have it docked I only use the external monitor, but this isn't possible now.
I also use the video out port to connect to my television, But I can't do this now either :( (only by reboot)

If I reboot the computer when it's connected to the monitor, vista comes up with a window that lets me choose how the monitors should work.
Any ideas to solve this?

Thanks to all, the resolution thing is the most important :D

I know that to use Aero, with both internal and external monitors in use, your graphics card must have certain amounts of physical memory to support some screen sizes. I remember seeing a table somewhere in a PDF on the MS website.

You might find that switching Aero off permits use of higher resolutions on external monitors.

If the refresh rate is the issue (your numbers appear confused saying that the max is now 1600x1200@75hz but you used to use 1600x1024@85hz,) then the 75/85 issue is the refresh rate used on the external monitor. This limit is either read using DDC from the screen itself, or comes from the monitor .INF file. Either way, you can override this in the Monitor Properties tab in the Catalyst Control Center if you are using the ATI Catalyst 7.1 drivers.

I don't even use Presentation Director, as the built in Vista presentation settings appears to work great for me using 2 screens.

I normal use 1600x1024@85 because thats what works best with my screen, but I'm also normally able to choose resolutions all the way up to about 1920x????

Now the 2 highest resolutions is 1440x???? and 1600x1200
NOT the one that works best for my monitor.

I don't think it has anything to do with aero, since I actually had the same problem with xp, when I installed ATI's drivers it didn't work, if I installed omega drivers I could choose the right resolutions.

Also I'm not trying to run dualscreen, just trying to get main display over to my external monitor and turn of LCD in laptop when docked. But in normal screen settings, I can't chosse "use this monitor as main"(or something like that)
