Vista runs slow

#1 Post by tony6264 » Wed Feb 07, 2007 9:56 pm

I just bought a new Toshiba laptop running Vista, and it seems to run really slow and takes too long to load anything...I realize this is a IBM forum but an OS is an OS.....it only has 512 of ram..and I am being told that is the min. required for Vista...so my question is....would an additional 512 megs help much, and are there any other things I can do to speed things up?
thanks

I've got a T60p with 256 MB of Dedicated Video Memory and another 763 MB of Shared Video Memory. Does that tell you anything? My Video card is using more memory than your computer has. I'd suggest installing 2 GB of memory, what are the spec on your computer?

actually no...that is not correct ...your video card is using 256...my laptop has 512 installed....and as far as the configuration..it is a Celeron 430 1.7 mhz ...at least i think that is what it is...I have only had this for about 5 days and I am not a software guy...I am more nuts and bolts.
thanks

These graphs might help show you the difference memory makes to Vista:

You can see the difference between 512MB and 1GB, as well as with and with a Flash memory stick that gives extra memory (called ReadyBoost).

Warder, thanks for that informative URL. Running Vista with 512MB RAM is probably equivalent to running XP with only 128MB.

And Tony, I was busy at work the whole day so I couldn't mail the 512MB module to you. I promise to do it tomorrow afternoon. Sorry for the delay.

That graph does show quite a difference between 512 and 1 gig....thank you.....I will have to wait and see what happens after I install the ram from Pianowizard.....I was almost ready to wipe Vista out and install XP......but know I think I will give some more time.
