Z60T Vista Upgrade Performance Hit?

#1 Post by panflute » Thu Feb 08, 2007 12:00 pm

I have a Z60T with 2 gig processor, 1 gig ram, 100 gig 7200 drive.

Let's say I decide it's worth it to pay for the Vista license (probably home premium upgrade?), spend time deinstalling the incompatible software, download the 29 IBM Vista drivers, install everything, replace software with newer versions.....let' say I decide it is worth doing it....

Will the laptop take a performance hit? I was checking some laptops in the store - most seemed to be sluggish, not sure why...
although the exploding windows seem quick enough,.
aero was not running on any of them. It is a given that aero is not an option, but wondering if Vista would be sluggish on the Z60T (2511-E7U)?

Is it actually worth doing it? Are those new IBM drivers perfected?
Anyone's thoughts appreciated.....

I would do a clean boot rather than just upgrade. I have a review of z61m under the vista section of this forum. My computer personally doesn't seem to have any problems. I might even say that it's faster than XP tho i have not run any tests to support that.

I've read quite a few performance comparison reviews around the web, and have personally been running Vista for a couple of months now.

I'd say that it is generally a little slower than XP was, but only by say 10%. Saying that, some really subjective things that are hard to measure, like the GUI, appear to run faster. The general windows environment 'feels' quicker to me, but it takes longer to do some things like boot.

I think that all that can be really said is that it won't be a lot slower, if that's any conciliation. Battery life will probably be lower if that's important to you.

As for drivers etc, on my Thinkpad the drivers all work great. Things like the fingerprint login are perhaps even better integrated to Vista than they were under XP, and Vista's built in tools sometimes mean you don't require the Vista ones - unless of course you prefer them.

I would say that Vista loves memory though. If you're just running 1 or 2 things, doing some Word, Outlook and browsing, then 1GB will be fine. If you are running lots of applications, perhaps look to buy some more RAM.

If you're happy with XP though, I'd probably stick with it as you cannot run Aero.

I definitely agree with you that the fingerprint login is so much better in Vista then in XP.

I was wondering if you had Power Manger installed. I've been having this problem where when I set the power scheme to Optimize Power Source, my screen brightness goes down to 1 when I'm plugged in. I can fix it by manually changing the brightness or by pulling my power plug in and out. Have you had this problem?
