Vista Overdone Annimation - a sign of the times?

I have recently installed Vista Ultimate on a T41 with 1Gb of memory. The "score" for the system is 1.0, which is primarily due to the video performance... most of the other sub-scores are pretty good.

Anyway, in previous versions of Windows, Freecell has always been one of the lightest touches on the system in terms of resources, so I was extremely surprised when I fired up the Vista version of Freecell and found it runs ponderously slowly on my T41 due to the lack of "enhanced" video capability! There is no "option" to turn off animations etc...... you just get stuck with an overly elaborate presentation for a simple game!

I had mistakenly assumed that I could choose to live without Aero's fancy graphic renderings if I wished, but apparently the need for enhanced graphics capability is hardwired into at least some aspects of the overall Vista offering, whether you want it or not!

Not happy!

Bill, shall I send you a copy of freecell.exe from my XP system?

Here's a free solitaire program that's pretty good: http://www.download.com/123-Free-Solita ... ag=lst-0-2. It includes Freecell.

The program runs fine on my X60s under Windows XP. I haven't tried it yet with Vista.

I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I think the XP Freecell will, in all likelihood, work fine under Vista, but Freecell itself is not the point of my original message.

I'm wondering how many other knooks and crannies there are in Vista where an "over done" animated user interface, which cant be disabled, has been plonked onto what is basically a pretty straightforward presentation need!

Just like XP added eye candy to Windows 2000, Vista will add more.

In some ways it's to be expected, and maybe even OK -- we need to use the fast CPUs and fancy graphics hardware for something after all, even if it doesn't exactly increase productivity!
