Reloading Windows... but without original disc??

#1 Post by mikek » Sat Feb 10, 2007 4:23 pm

Just bought another second hand TP - an R51. It's come with a genuine version of Xp on it - but no disc. I've used magicjellybean to get the windows key.... but if I ever need to reload xp can I use one of my other genuine Xp discs and just supply the key that magicjellybean has found for me.... or is it nothing like this simple??

Thanks
Regards

Read the sticky regarding Windows Licensing at the top of this thread. That should clear up your question. Come back if you need more help.

If this is a factory XP install you should be able to make a set of recovery discs if the R51 came with a CDRW or better. If a set has already been made use F11 at boot to restore to factory condition, then you can make a set.
If this is a factory XP install the number you got with keyfinder it is a Volume License Key and will not work with a retail or OEM cd only a VLK cd. Good luck finding one of them.
Is there no XP sticker on the bottom? If there is no sticker and it is not a factory install it would be an illegal installation.

Thanks to Stargate and CarbonUnit - I've no COA sticker - so I'm probably knackered if I ever need to reload.
