Fn + F3 will turn display off, but minutes to turn back on

#1 Post by GomJabbar » Fri Feb 16, 2007 12:02 pm

I just started playing around with Vista again today. I downloaded and installed a number of Lenovo driver updates. I am using Vista RC1 on my T42 with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. If I press Fn + F3, I can turn the display (LCD) off, but I can't seem to turn it back on. The only solution I have found so far is to hold the power button down until the computer shuts off, and then reboot. :?

If this has been posted before, I am not easily finding it.

EDIT: I have installed the Vista Hotkey driver, Lenovo Interface driver, and Vista Power Management driver - all from Lenovo's site.

Well, I've been playing with it some more, and here is what I found out so far.

After pressing Fn + F3, I can still go into Standby by pressing Fn + F4 or by closing the display lid. When I bring it out of Standby, the display comes back on.

I can hold the power button down for several seconds and release, then the display lights back up and the laptop goes through the shutdown sequence and turns off [FTR, I have the power button set to shut off the laptop].

I tried rolling back the ThinkPad PM device [ThinkPad Power Management Driver] from 1.41 to 1.33 without effect.

I found if I press Fn + F3, the display turns off. If I wait a minute or so, then move the TrackPoint, after about 50 seconds the display will come back on. In case you are wondering, the crescent moon LED never lit up using Fn + F3, so the laptop did not go into Standby.

So in a way, it is working like in XP, only about 50 times slower. :?

SOrry to say but that feature is broken even in my old Thinkpad A20m. I been looking for the fix for that problem. I never had issues with XP on stand by.

Actually, Standby is working acceptably for me. It is a few seconds slower to enter than in XP, but it comes out rather quickly.

FYI, I tried manually pressing the display switch that is used when you close the display; the display goes instantly off, and when released, instantly back on. This is with it set to do nothing in power options.

After some more experimenting, I found out the following:

Fn + F3 to turn display off. Display off in 1-2 seconds. After 1 minute, move TrackPoint, and 50 seconds later display comes on.

Fn + F3 to turn display off. After 2 minutes, move TrackPoint, and display comes on in 1-2 seconds.

Fn + F4 to enter Standby. Standby achieved in 7 seconds. Press Fn to come out of Standby, 4 Seconds later login screen appears. Total time to enter and come out of Standby 10-11 seconds.

Strange. I suspect a bug in the Power Management Driver or the Hotkey Driver. FWIW, the Hotkey Driver Vista Version 2.00.0611 is listed as only compatible with the following (the T42 is not listed). Nevertheless, this is the version of the Hotkey Driver that I installed (2.00.0611).

- R52
- R60, R60e
- G50
- T43, T43p
- T60, T60p
- X41, X41 Tablet
- X60, X60s, X60 Tablet
- Z60m, Z61e, Z61m, Z61p, Z61t

Yet, several of the T42 Vista Compatible downloads, such as Access Connections, The Intel Wireless Driver, and the Keyboard Customizer Utility state that the following must be installed:

ThinkPad Hotkey Features for Windows 2000, XP, Vista Version 2.00.0611 (or later) must be installed.

EDIT: One more test. I put the T42 on battery power, and after 5 minutes the display turned off (which is how I had it set in Power Options). Within 5 seconds of the display turning off, I moved the TrackPoint, and the display turned right back on within a second or two.
