Vista worries

#1 Post by orca3000 » Sat Feb 17, 2007 8:29 pm

I recently ordered a T60 with xp preloaded. I chose it over a Vista preloaded T60p. I believe that I've made the right choice for my needs, but I still have two unresolved worries about Vista?

A) How easy is it to get the upgrade disc? Lots of people seem to have problems with Moduslink.

B) How easy is it to upgrade? Does upgrading work out well? I can expect a preloaded system to work right out of box, but lots of people here seem to have issues with upgrading. I would love to see a step by step guide about Vista upgrading on a Thinkpad.

Am I over-analyzing stuff again?

No.

Upgrades have never gone well for me or anyone I have known, so I avoid them at all costs.

On the other hand, things improve, so the upgrade from XP to Vista may be improved and may go well.

It will be at least six months before Juniper releases Vista-compatible remote connection software (slothful layabouts for waiting until now to even think about it), so by that time, I will be ready for a Vista preload. ... JD Hurst

I did a Win XP SP2 to Vista Business upgrade last week, and things went quite well for the most part. Some ThinkVantage features didn't work without an upgrade, of course, and I had some initial frustrations with the fingerprint reader (and a forgotten XP user account password), but it wasn't until a few days ago that things really got interesting.

I'm not sure at what point along the way I crossed the line, but I got a bit too enthusiastic in my driver upgrades, and now I've got some problems. Truth be told, all I really want to do is a fresh install, but I've no idea how to do that, since we have no original XP CDs to validate from when Vista (upgrade version) goes searching. I'm guessing there is a simple solution, but with Microsoft's ever-increasing security protocols, I'm hesitant. I'm also not too sure about which order to proceed in, and which drivers I need to have on hand first. I've been reading the boards, but any insights would be most helpful!

You can install Vista in 30 day trial mode by not using the product key number, then reinstall over it and enter your upgrade key to get a full install.
