Installing Vista? READ THIS FIRST!

#1 Post by Army Chief » Mon Feb 19, 2007 10:22 am

Vista and the T60 are a great match, but be forewarned: if you attempt an upgrade without uninstalling Sonic DLA first, you'll be in for a world of frustration. Essentially, it comes down to the fact that DLA is not compatible with Vista at all, but if you install Vista over it, then DLA cannot be uninstalled. (Actually, a net search will reveal a new patch to take care of this, but you'll be tearing your hair out until you find it.)

Also, as I noted in a separate thread, if you have been using your fingerprint reader to log into Windows for months and months, you need to make sure that you remember your user account password before you upgrade. Why? Well, when Vista initially boots, it will not offer you the fingerprint reader option, and you will have to remember the actual account password. I didn't, apparently, and while there are work-arounds for this, too, it caused a lot of unnecessary pain.

Take a look at the sticky note headlining the Vista board here on the forum, and you should be well prepared. The drivers matrix link is there, too. All in all, Vista runs extremely well on a T60, but it pays to do a bit of reading before you drop that DVD into the reader.

Why did you not post a link for the patch then??

I don't need it, but someone might.

Sorry about that. I didn't include a link initially because I wasn't entirely sure where I had actually downloaded the file. My initial searches revealed a number solutions (of various effectivness, I would imagine), and I waded through several of them before finding the actual Roxio patch. I've since seen links to it here on the boards, so I didn't think to go back and post the URL.

This thread will get you the rest of the way home: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=38182
