I want to back to XP from Vista, But........
well, I positively say VISTA is a good OS which is faster and more stable, but I don't like the indexing, coz everytime when I restart my laptop, the hard drive is reading for a long time( 7200rpm,100G). So, I make a decision back to XP again until there is a hybird hard drive for T60. However, I found out that little bluebutton did not work anymore, so I can not access that recovery menu when I restart my laptop. Also, I didnot delete that hidden driver part... Does anyone can give me a support and tell me why the rescue and reconvery function doesnt work?
this topic made me register lol
HELLO TO ALL!!
ok if the indexing is the reason for you wanting to go back to xp.....you know you can dissable indexing, shadowcopy and windows search. That is what i did on my t43 and it made a significant difference in loadtimes and mem useage Also take a look at these "top ten vista tweaks/shortcuts" http://www.laptopmag.com/Features/Top-T ... rtcuts.htm
I hope this helps you keep vista

I think i am stupid.
coz I put recovery disc into my machine, and it loaded.
well, all files are gone....no backup...
Actually, I like Vista, coz it is faster than XP. only one thing bother me is the hard drive. it was clicking for a long time when I restart my computer. I thought Vista was preloading files in to memory..
anyways, I think I have to wait for the hybrid hard drive.......

thanks for the tip bopchie, only had vista premium for a day and a half, and i was looking to get rid of the indexing. dont really need it the way i use my system
IBM T43 2668-44U - running Ubuntu & XP---1.86Ghz - 1.5GB PC-4200 - 40GB 5400 RPM HDD / 7K100 in Ultraslim Bay - X300 64MB - FP Reader - and my Sennheiser HD-595s
no prob, i hope it helps you, indexing ise usefull if you do alot of document related work or if you search for stuff.......i have never used indexing either, it just dont suit me. I do mostly gaming, media and photoshopping on my systems.
I am gonnastart a thread with a link to Koroush Ghazi's MASSIVE vista tweakguide, I think alot of yous will like it and its a good read....I still havent found the time to read the whole thing

Yep, I also disabled indexing and windows search. In addition, I disabled "SuperFetch" as well. I really couldn't tell much difference with it enabled, and not having a sluggish system while it fills up 2GB of DDRII ram is nice as well.
For some reason, Vista still manages to fill up 2GB of my system ram with cached files, but it does it as files/programs are opened, which is better IMHO.

you should turn that stuff back on... if not, you're an idiot. prefetching system files and apps into unused space means it loads faster; if you havn't noticed, then you havn't been using your computer long enough. sure it fills up ram, but it gives a higher priority to open programs and will free space as necessary.JHaislet wrote:Yep, I also disabled indexing and windows search. As for indexing, it only indexes the whole drive once, and then indexes simply the changed files. Why would you disable indexing?
I really appreciate you calling me an idiot...that really adds credibility to your reply...
Anyways, for those interested in constructive feedback about Vista (excluding Mr. Maloventevil), I ran SuperFetch for about 4 weeks and did testing with my specific setup. My application load times were basically the same after I turned off SuperFetch. I've probably read most of the reviews out there about SuperFetch to date. While SF is a great idea, I think Microsoft's implementation of it still needs some work.
Maybe it will be better after Vista SP1. I will definitely re-enable it and try it out again when MS releases major updates for Vista. However, until then, I will enjoy speedy boot up's and minimal HDD access in the interim.
Regarding indexing...
The multiple index threads run constantly and seem to always be doing stuff on my HDD (and yes, this was still the case after 3+ weeks of almost 24/7 power-on time and minimum file modification). The indexer was always nice enough to try to index massive amounts of files when I was in the process of sorting and moving them (really slows everything up).
Also, I might perform a full-drive search maybe 3 or 4 times a month. I keep my files well organized and know where everything is.
Why do I need the indexer running in the background slowing everything up??? (BTW, without the indexer running, full-drive searches take about the same time as in XP, which was more than fast enough for me).
If that makes me an idiot, well, so be it.
BTW, I disabled User Account Control, Windows Defender, Windows Firewall (for my local network). Unlike some folks out their, I don't need uncle bill's paternalistic presence to keep me safe on Al Gore's "internet."
Cheers!

I think this is more of a "Love it or Hate it" deal.......if the fetching/indexing floats your boat....then sail all day bucko

It turned out that my z60m hard drive was never ever powering down on battery, but it wasn't the indexing or anything (which don't run on battery), but a Vista bug.MrSpike wrote:In theory wouldn't turning all that off actually help battery life as the HDD does not need to be accessed as much? This hotfix update fixed that issue for me:
