XP taking forever to load UI after logon

#1 Post by Bob34 » Fri Feb 23, 2007 1:13 am

This issue seems to have appeared after the last round of Security Updates. After logging in it takes 2-3 minutes for the UI to appear.

The Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service hung on starting. Is the only indication of the slowdown. I've tried disabling the service but the problem persists, and I get DCOM errors related to it (StiSvc).

I do have an Integrated Camera. Any help would be appreciated. This is driving me nuts.

PS I've tried uninstalling Security Patch for the MS07-007 Bulletin.

I don't think it has anything to do with a security update, directly. Most likely it is a startup program that is causing the system to hang. I had several computer do that with Internet Security software. I have all updates on all my machines, and I don't have a problem. (and that includes all of the computers in my house).
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

The service itself shouldn't hang though. The only security software that's on it is stuff that's been on it since I've gotten the computer though.

Now that I remember, I did have a problem with my Pentium 4 desktop with the WIA service. I don't remember how I fixed it, but I think I did some tweaking to the services. You can access that by typing "services.msc" in the run prompt from the start menu. Take a look around at what you need and don't. Google a specific service to find out its function. What ever you do, do NOT disable the RPC (remote procedure call) service. Doing so will make Windows completely useless.

:D Believe me, there isn't a service that is running that dpesn't A) Needs to run B) I want it to run

I'm thinking the Service is being called up regardless because of what's installed for the Integrated Camera to show up in My Computer.

Disablign the service does seem to lessen the slow down, but its not gone completely.

To Give you an idea, I have fingerprint logon from Boot (BIOS prompt) so after it boots into XP and accepts the finger print, the UI (Start Menu, toolbars, etc) is immediately shown.

Man this is getting annoying. Disabling device, disabling service, removing service from registry, nothing is working.

You could try Windows System Restore to go back to a time before the updates were installed that you believe are causing your problem. If this is successful, you can apply your updates one-by-one and hopefully find the offending culprit. :)

Ouch, I don't use System Restore. If its disabled and service disabled I'm going to go out on a limb and say restore points wouldn't be available.

It's driving me insane. Something else must be calling up the service or hanging the system, device is disabled, service is disabled and still there's a long load, not as much when the service isn't disabled though.

Is there any other drivers I can use for the Integrated Camera? That question is probably better suited for the Z series forum though.
