It doesn't. Where do you see that? I am not going to read all of this again to find it.

FYI, there are different ways to do this. The OP of this thread outlined a method that does not require one to purchase a copy of Windows. The disc is made from the files already existing on the ThinkPad that has a copy of Windows installed. The OP and others wish to have a clean copy Windows installed without the IBM/Lenovo add-ons (except for necessary drivers).
Step number 5 says to download windows xp package with three links. One link is dead, one link is inaccessable, and the third brings you to a web site that sells the package.

I am not going to read through 270 replies to find step 5. Quote the relevant post.

You don't need to read 270 replies. It is located in the link in the original post that outlines the 16 step process. You need to ask UCI_MECH to repair the link to his site where the streamlining proccess is located. Step number 5 says to download the windows xp package with three links where the package presumably can be found. One link is dead, one link is inaccessable, and the third link takes you to a cite where it may be purchased. I was just curious as to why would you go through the 16 step proccess when you can just purchase a copy of windows for the same price then just download the thinkpad drivers?

I do not know what you are reading since I get a page not found message in the link of the original post.

Not wanting to read all those posts either, here is a guide to slipstream XP with SP2
http://www.theeldergeek.com/slipstreamed_xpsp2_cd.htm

If you want to re-install XP without having to re-activate it, copy your current c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl onto a floppy, to another partition, to another HD or to a memory stick.
Reinstall XP. Boot into the Recovery Console and copy that saved file back to c:\windows\system32
That is all.
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I think the intent was to link to a page where you could download a wxp.zip file (for free?), but the only link that worked took you here:
http://www.cheetahcomputer.com/default. ... xp+package

I think I found the intended zip file elsewhere.

The image retrieved from the Windows XP disc is called: Microsoft Corporation.img. This file is 2 Kb. I used IsoBuster to extract this image. www.isobuster.com

As far as the iso image for the entire XP CD, that may be about the size you are describing.

I used the information from the following two articles to make a slipstream disc for a desktop PC. This is not exactly the same as what the Sticky is all about, but some of the same steps do apply. The part about updating the the files in the Windows folder (where you are building the CD file structure) with SP2, didn't work with Maximum Pc's solution for me. I had to use the solution I found in PC Magazine for this. But generally I used Maximum PC's solution, with parts of PC Magazine's solution thown in.

Is it possible to use the slipstreamed CD burned from one computer to load windows XP on another computer (providing of course the second computer has a COA for Windows XP and is a factory install?

Why the install of old drivers first?

#280 Post by AndyKH » Wed Mar 07, 2007 6:07 am

I must admit that I haven't read through all the posts, so sorry if it has been answered already:

But, why is the guide instructing you to install the old drivers first? As I see it, the only driver that needs to installed before installing the newest drivers directly from the internet (apart from the chipset driver) is the network driver.

So why the advise of installing old drivers first?

Thanks in advance
Andreas

For a ThinkPad this should work with a Windows XP OEM CD. You use the product key from the sticker on the bottom of the ThinkPad. You will have to activate Windows after the install. AFAIK, a Windows XP Retail or Upgrade CD will not accept the product key from the bottom of the ThinkPad.

If you have kept your ThinkPad up-to-date driver wise, then those drivers will be located in subdirectories of C:\DRIVERS\. All the original drivers and software (such as WinDVD and RecordNow!) that shipped with your ThinkPad will be in subdirectories C:\IBMTOOLS\. By running Software Installer after installing Windows and the above directories, you will have your ThinkPad as up-to-date as when the Fresh Install CD was made. Admittedly, you will have two versions of many of the drivers on your hard drive, but Software Installer should pick the latest version. With Software Installer you always have the option to skip each software/driver package for installation. If you know there are newer versions available, you could download and install them instead. Note that when you download driver packages from Lenovo's site and run them, they extract themselves to subdirectories of C:\DRIVERS\. HTH

Windows 2000

#285 Post by fleamourian » Mon Mar 26, 2007 8:50 am

I have checked above link but you have to all ready have a Win 2000 boot CD. My laptop originally came with an OEM Keycode for Win 2000 Professional, can I phone IBM for a boot CD? I am currently trying to purchase a copy from eBay.

Edit: IBM no longer supply restore disks for 2000, I will purchase a copy of XP.

I'm a bit confused here, and haven't been reading the thread (270+ posts)

So this will let me extract XP from the i386 directory and make a clean install with it?

Since the original guide is no longer available and not maintained, I found an easier alternative and posted my experience of a fresh install on a T42 here:

Help, I need somebody, Help, not just anybody, Help !!!!!!

#292 Post by iuntric » Wed Jun 13, 2007 2:48 pm

hi everyone

I’ve tried this method, but during the install of the xp pro I've created from my T42 2373-was + cdrw combo, I received several messages during the install, saying that some files are missing, and that the xp may don't work.

And, for this time, Microsoft was right, it doens't work !!! (the first message I received during the 1st boot was: notskrnl.exe is missing , blablablabla......)

here is the list of the missing files on the cd:

timesi.ttf
admtoolw.chm
eventvwr.msc
merlin.acs
oembios.bin
sceconw.chm
p3.sys
ks.sys
moedm.sys
parport.sys
shell32.sys
wldap32.dll
wdmaud.drv
pjlmon.dll
ndiswio.sys
processr.sys
amdk6.sys
cmstp.exe
hid.dll
jscript.dll
msmbios.sys
nic1394.sys
p2pgasvc.dll
sonydcam.sys
wzcsapi.dll
wsh263.dre
ntoskrnl.exe
ntkrnlpa.exe
mouclass.sys

It may contain some errors, but I believe that somebody could find the BIG mistake I've made.

PS: sorry for my english, I do my best, like the mighty Borrat says !

I'm going to read this entire thread, but im already having problems. I'm trying to build my laptop off a slipstreamed SP2 XP CD. I always get stuck where it wont find any hard drives. I tried downloading some SATA drivers onto a floppy, but it still wont take them. I am using a USB external floppy.

See if your laptop has a "Compatibility Mode" setting in the BIOS. Set to "compatible" while you're installing Windows. After you get Windows working, download the driver for your disk and then change the setting back to "AHCI" (or whatever your BIOS calls it) and reboot. Windows should then detect the hardware change and install the driver.
