Reliable backup software?

#1 Post by simonbrew » Sat Feb 24, 2007 11:19 am

I've been using Ghost 2003 as backup s/w for years, but I'm wondering if there are better packages out there, free or otherwise?

Ghost backup under XP works fine, but restore from USB external hard drive using standalone floppies in USB floppy drive on a T41 or R40e doesn't work for me.
To create the bootable floppy, you need access to a working Win 95/98 machine to produce a MS-DOS startup disk which is then used to create the Ghost bootable floppy. Does anyone have a Win95/98 machine? Could they mail me an MS DOS start-up disk produced on it? I'm happy to pay via Paypal.

I have Ghost 2003-793 which is the latest version, but I can't get the boot floppy to boot - Norton help says I need to change an entry for ASPIUHCI.SYS in Config.sys on my Ghost floppy, but I don't have a config.sys on the floppy. Any ideas?

What s/w do you use? What about Norton save and Restore or perhaps something from other vendors?

Sorry about all these questions - I'll look forward to responses...

Save your money. If you need an ms-dos bootdisk go to www.bootdisk.com and download one from there. They have many choices.

you can make a bootdisk under windows xp and look for the config.sys on the disk after, it may be a hidden file so you should enable windows to show hidden files.
the config.sys is a simple text file, if it doesn't exist you can just create it with notepad in windows xp and put it on your floppy and add the line you need like:

devicehigh=a:\ASPIUHCI.SYS

and put ASPIUHCI.SYS on your floppy a:\

I personally like to use Acronis TrueImage BootCD, it has a graphical interface and works great with my ibm T23 laptop with 2 ntfs partitions...

good luck!

Backup or image?

#5 Post by robegusn » Sat Feb 24, 2007 9:36 pm

If you already have a solid working image, why not just backup your files to an FTP server or an external drive?

If you Google "Cobian Backup", you will find a very effective and free backup program.

If you want something with some extra features, Google "Genie Backup".

My normal routine is to create a fresh updated image (using Acronis) about every 6 months and I synchronize parts of my profile (My Documents, Application Data, etc.) to an FTP server on a nightly basis. Since I synchronize as opposed to backup only changes or new files need to be moved.
