Slow system access
Slow system access
Hi,
I have a T41P with XP Pro. Its about 1 month that my computer has become very sluggish. Every time I access some programs i.e. Add/Remove, My computer or DN Speaking (It almost stops my computer) the CPU goes to 100% for a while before the program opens up.
I thought its from one of Norton Internet Security 2007 updates so I uninstall it and bought a Kapersky Internet Security 6.0 but still have the same problem. There is no virus or anything on my T41P either. I have also checked the Windows Task Manager but only the processor of the opening program is at 100%
Unfortunately I'm traveling now for the next month or so therefore my flexibility is very limited.
I think its from one of the Lenovo or MS updates but which one I don't know. Anyone has any idea how to resolve this.
Thanks
Sepehr

In the same way it wasn't Symantec, it probably also is not Microsoft and probably also not Lenovo. It is probably also not the number of processes.
Check in Task Manager for the processes that consume CPU and see if you can determine which programs are responsible. Try disabling such programs from startup temporarily.
Also check your temporary files and Explorer cache. The default Explorer cache is very, very large. Allowing it to maximize will result in sluggish performance. I keep my Explorer cache at 20 Mb. IE is very fast and I have no issues resulting from a small cache.
Finally, make sure you defragment your hard drive - now, and then regularly in future. Having programs spread in pieces all over the drive will definitely impede performance.

Hi JD Hurst
I have checked the Task Manager for the processor that consume 100% CPU and saw the program responsible was the one I was opening.
Now I have had my T41P for over 3 years and I pretty much know how long things used to take. As I mentioned this has started about a month ago.
Everything else you mentioned I have checked and they are correct.

So any time you open a new program, that program will max the CPU for several (?) seconds? How many seconds? Are there some programs that do NOT do this?
Is everything running properly once the program has been started?

I know the one thing that will take up the CPU, Automatic Update Service. It seems to not cause a problem with my desktop, but cause a problem with almost every other computer I have.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

The sluggishness continues. For example up to last month scanning about 768000 files with Norton Internet Security 2007 would take a Little more than 1 hour. Yesterday before I uninstall it after 5.5 hours it had only scanned about 250000 files. Even Kapersky Internet Security 6.0 is very very slow. Without any Security software on my computer its till slow. But can't figure out whats wrong with it.

Check that your hard drive is operating in Ultra DMA mode and not PIO mode. Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers > Primary IDE Channel > Advanced Settings > Current Transfer Mode: to view. If you are not operating in Ultra DMA Mode, see the following link. I believe you should be using Ultra DMA Mode 5 as that is what my T42 uses.

If you have a lot of files, the Indexing Service might be the culprit as well.
On all my PCs and laptops I always disable the Indexing Service (Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services) right from the Windows installation onwards.
I also disable it in the hard disk properties (in Explorer, rightclick any hard-disk (partition), select Properties, General tab. At the bottom you see 'Allow indexing...', UNtick that, confirm it for ALL directories, and tick 'Ignore All errors' during the process. May take a minute or so.
I always found this greatly improves hard disk access.
