BETTER OFF KEEPING XP

#1 Post by Truthfinder » Mon Feb 26, 2007 1:36 am

For what it's worth, Vista needs lots of work and at its best is a system hog...................

I'll be keeping XP PRO until Vista gets it right, which I beleive won't be for at least a year or so.....................

Enjoy ;-) 8)

Will wait for need of new Thinkpad

#4 Post by BigWarpGuy » Mon Feb 26, 2007 7:13 pm

From everything I have read about Vista (especially the anti-piracy software), it is best to wait till all the 'bugs' are worked out before upgrading. WinXP has been around for awhile and most of the 'bugs' worked out. I will remain with WinXP for awhile. 8)

If I were to install Vista (though I have no intention of doing so), I would prolly turn off about, oh, 95% of the eye candy and services in any case... hey, that's what I do on every Windows.

Frankly, the only reason I would upgrade from XP to Vista would be for utilization of the 64-bit processor, and since that would require me to give Microsoft money, I'll'a be installing Linux or BSD when I make that move instead.

For the most part, it's pretty stable. I think you should try it before you put it down. :D

Hey guys, I'm having a lot of fun with Vista! I have it dualbooted on my T42, which for Vista has low-grade graphics hardware, and use it whenever I'm undocked. It is very snappy - snappier (I mean more responsive to user input) than Win2K3 or XP with the same number (i.e. lots) of windows open. I haven't noticed it to be a resource hog - in fact, when running the same number of programs I have found it to be using significantly less RAM than Win2K3/XP (say 40-60% of 2GB instead of 55-75%). It DOES tend to use more CPU though, and always seems to be grinding away at doing something, even when I'm not having any app do anything. It also takes ages to boot - about 5 minutes to completely get there - though once it's there it's good. And I have found one stability issue - or one sort of stability issue. A couple of programs ALWAYS crash when I try to access the menu (mouse or keyboard) - notably Notepad and Acrobat Pro 8 (reinstalling Acrobat didn't help). Also a couple of things crash when I right-click on them - notably the Vista Sidebar and a couple of other things.

I gave Vista Business a try on a Sony Vaio that has simliar hardware to my T60 and it was fine.

It was definately prettier, and seemed a little more reponsive in some aspects than XP Pro on my T60.

I think the big factor in me using it immediately is how it runs on my T60 (how well the various drivers work) along with the very few games that I do play on my laptop. I suspect that the only problem with games may be with the amount of System Memory due to ATI's HyperMemory.

I'll definately give it a shot once my free upgrade ships, there are a few things that Vista likes to do that seems to slow it down initially upon installation but those seem to go away after a little use of the actual computer.

I removed Vista Ultimate and went back to XP Pro. Access connections was having a very hard time connecting to my buddies WPA network, somehting it never had a problem with in XP. Also nearly all wifi operations (network scanning, joining, disconnecting) took way too long to complete. Otherwise I loved Vista. I'll go back after SP1.

Service Pack 3 for XP is due out in 2008, so there is no rush for me. On the other hand, as soon as Juniper brings out a version of Netscreen Remote for Vista, I will probably purchase a Vista ThinkPad with Office 2007 and go from there. End of 2007 earliest at this point. ... JD Hurst

Vista comments....

#12 Post by turkington » Wed Feb 28, 2007 4:25 pm

I have been using Vista business on a T60 (2007-63u) T2500 with 2GB RAM for about a month now...

No issues that are show stoppers, Access connections has issues with creating new profiles but there's a work around for that.

I agree with the comments about it taking 5 min. to boot, but once it's up you don't need to reboot and it's rock solid. I have Office 2007 Enterprise, and LOADS of other applications going all at once and see no need to look at XP anymore.

My only regret is a 5400 rpm disk... it really gets hammered at times. Perhaps a hybrid (disk + flash) in the near future?

Just my perspctive.
