After hibernation x60s is slow

#1 Post by tyanlion » Mon Feb 26, 2007 10:48 am

Hi,

Whenever I boot out from hibernation, explorer will hang/crash and the whole computer will slow down. it takes years to open a window. I don't know if the cause of this is a virus is this normal ??? I don't want to have to install windows 2003 into this thing if i can avoid it but if its a virus well i really can't stand that

The symptoms don't sound virus-like at all. It is normal for an older computer to hang a little, but excessive hang can be caused by many things. You can try to use task manager to check for the hung-process. This can help diagnose the problem. It is also good practice to try turning off any firewall software and try, jusst to eliminate it as a possibility.

I think i know what is causing the problem. when i leave my workplace the computer is stuck under a domain. I have a network drive and othernetwork drive options. Once i reenter into my home network which has a different domain the system must be trying to readjust or something. trying to automatically find network printers and files. (although i have turned off the auto find network option in my folder options)

I think you've hit the nail on the head. This problem is often caused by having mapped drives in Windows XP. Windows will attempt to check the drive occasionally, and if you've changed locations and the network is not available, it will hang up for a while until it times out.

Do you have any drive mappings on your work network? If so, delete them and recreate them as non-persistent entries in "My Network Places". Windows doesn't check those until you explicitly click on the folder to open it.

I have thought of an easier solution. just switch off the wireless when windows starts when i am at my work place. So it will not be mapping the drives when it starts
