I'm assuming it's an external USB ? My first suggestion is slow the burn speed down to the next lower setting instead of 'max' or however HP shows it. I use nero for windows.

One more thing, when you are burning, walk away from the machinea, put your hands in your pockets or something, don't browse or other stuff, just let it burn..

I just noticed the models, thats USB1.1 which could be your problem. Is that HP drive a 2.0USB ? I've seen some issues even though they day backward compatible. Might want to try picking up a USB2.0 PCMICA card and try that. I know I've used usb1.1 system connecting to a 500gig Seagate hard drive to do backups and it takes forever [several hours, like more the 5].
Does it fail right away or towards the end. Nero is easy to watch, I'm not familiar with the software you are using. I've also got Droppix and that seems to work well with a Mad Dog usb dvd burner but it has turned out a few coasters even on the 3.0ghz dell desktop it's connected to. Memory could also have something to do with it as in not enough.

HP DVD writer 400i does not work

#5 Post by fr0zenmon » Fri Mar 02, 2007 3:49 pm

I have a hp m400y desktop with dvd writer 400i internal drive. I have never been able to burn dvds. And now i really need to.

My specs are fine. I think its something with winxp pro or burning software roxio.
Hp recommends recordnow, but i think i deleted it a long time ago. And since i dont have boot disks, HP put an image on a partition to make a copy, but how can i do that w/o dvd burning.

What should i do? How can i resolve this?

Are you using the right type of media that is compatible with your DVD burner? Some DVD writers only work with +R media, others with -R media, then some work with RW media and dual layer media.

What type of DVD's are you trying to burn? Are you trying to copy files from your hard drive, burn audio, burn videos, make backups? Can you burn CD's?

Which version of Roxio are you using? Are you sure you don't have any other recording software installed such as DLA, INCD, Nero or RecordNow!?

I would hold off on installing DLA, as I believe it is incompatible with Roxio software.
