Transfering A HD with preisntall Vista to another Thinkpad

#1 Post by WizardNYC » Fri Mar 02, 2007 4:33 pm

Hi,

I recently purchase a Thinkpad t42 which has a legit windows vista business install, And I want to transfer the hard drive with windows vista to another t42 which I have, and then install back windows xp to the other one.

I need to know if this will work :)

PS: If i want to start over on the laptop which i want to windows vista, could i use the key again on it, and if I don't have the windows vista cd is there anyways to get it and use the key of my legit windows vista HD.

Thanks

It will work as long as the motherboards are the same. thats the only thing xp is picky abt . btw u can download a software called transxp that will transfer your operating system to another hd. its shareware but works for 15 days

Thanks guys for your, posts

Well I just transfer the hard drive (phisical hd, not the contains inside of it), and it gave me a OS not found, then I don't know what happen I restarted it again and everything works great now :)

The MB was the same in terms of specs so I guess that's why :)

And I am able to get updates from microsoft so I dont think their an issue with that.

:)

PS: I love vista, is faster, seems more reliable after using it for two days, although I need a better video card to use the real cool stuff, so good job microsoft :)

In my case I swapped hard drives from a 40GB to 80GB on a T41 using Ghost32.exe. So basically only the physical hard drive changed and the processor remained the same. I had to reactivate Vista Ultimate one more time from the 80GB drive. My guess would be the new hard drive signature spooked Vista's validation algorithm.
