Have tried playing a trusted source (cd, mp3, etc.)? I'm just wondering if it's a hardware error or if the stream you're trying to play is corrupted.

Try running DirectX diagnostics. Go to Start > Run > type dxdiag in the Open: box and choose OK.

yeah i distinctly did that, no problems detected in directx i even installed windows media classic for the codecs but it didn't work. i don't think 2k3 likes the inbuilt audio. On my other 2k3(not r2) the stream plays fine (soundblaster card) sigh its a pretty good os too was hopping that it would be the main os.

Could that be feedback from an open microphone or Skype phone?
In the Volume Settings, tick on Mute for Input to check.

Similar problem here with WIN2K. I had windows search for other drivers for my sound card. It came up with some generic M$ ones (vs. the correct, manufacturer's specific ones I had already loaded). I let it install M$'s generic ones, and the problem was fixed.
