Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate do have slightly different system requirements. Go to this page to find out what these differences are. Your 16MB video card will prevent you from using the Aero Glass interface.

No matter which version you end up using, I highly recommend you to replace the 256MB stick you currently have with a 1GB one. Brent is selling a bunch of them now. You should also get a much bigger hard drive.
Microsoft Surface 3 (Atom x7-Z8700 / 4GB / 128GB / LTE)
Dell OptiPlex 9010 SFF (Core i3-3220 / 8GB / 8TB); HP 8300 Elite minitower (Core i7-3770 / 16GB / 9.25TB)
Acer T272HUL; Crossover 404K; Dell 3008WFP, U2715H, U2711, P2416D; Monoprice 10734; QNIX QHD2410R; Seiki Pro SM40UNP

So I've got Windows Vista Business Edition on my X31 running and most things work fine except for

> Fn F5 to Manage Wireless Card
Bluetooth control works just fine but for the wireless card, it's perpetually ON but the Fn F5 utility doesn't detect that. Status is OFF in the utility and I can't toggle it.

> Access Connections
Crashes :-) ... using the version released for Vista but when I try to set up a profile it crashes with the error message "Access Connections GUI has encountered an error"

Anyone else have similar problems? or have successfully gotten Fn F5 to work on their X31?

Download the ThinkVantage Access Connections for Windows Vista and wireless drivers and dependent drivers software (7kcna4ww.exe). This is the 25 Mb download on the following page. Also download the readme txt file (7kcna4ww.txt) to check the installation instructions.

ThinkVantage Access Connections for Windows Vista - Notebooks

I would uninstall Access Connections and uninstall your wireless driver. Reboot and cancel any Found Hardware Wizards (I guess that Vista has this similar to XP). Then install the above download.

Well installing this mostly worked. I had to manually pick the driver (11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter II) since it didn't automatically associate with the driver. But Fn F5 works now :D

Access Connections still crashes when setting up new profiles though ... :( Error message is

"ThinkVantage Access Connections Main GUI Application has stopped working"

*** update 3/6 ***
So it's a mixed bag of tricks :-) ... the wireless card I have on the X31 is a 11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI adapter. The driver that is released with Access Connections 4.31 is 11 a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter II.

So if you use the correct driver, Fn F5 cannot manage the ON/OFF status of the wireless card.

If you use the driver released with Access Connections 4.31, things don't work quite right.

Conclusion: Use the right driver and forgo the ability to use Fn F5 to turn the wireless card ON/OFF.

To be honest, I doubt it very much (of course, this depends on your definition of "without problems") ;)

Without problems, i mean does it actually work to a satisfactory level if say you had 1.7 cpu and 2gb Ram.

2 GB is a good amount of RAM for Vista, cpu is not that important. Add a fast HD to it, and Vista may actually run well on that hardware. Yet, there is only one way we can find out for sure :D
