T60p with upgraded CPU and VISTA running VERY HOT

#1 Post by stephenaron » Mon Mar 05, 2007 8:56 pm

A few months back i upgraded my CPU from a T2600 to a T7600. Then i went out, bought an OEM new HD from newegg.com, and installed VISTA on it. The right side of the palm rest, above the HD seems like its much warmer than it used to be with XP on the old HD. Any thoughts? NHC doesnt work on VISTA yet, so i dont know how to measure to make sure i am not nuts. Is this increase in temp normal, and should it be noticeable?

The problem you're referring to maybe caused because Vista uses the GPU power much more than the XP engine. I noticed that also when I installed Vista Ultimate on my T42p.
I'd rather have XP for about a year before seriously considering a full upgrade to Vista

T60p with upgraded CPU and VISTA running VERY HOT

It is for that same reason that i installed a new hard drive for vista, and left my XP install intact, and ready to swap back if need be.

Which hard disk are you running?

What are the temperatures (using NHC or RMClock)? What power mode are you running in?

I am using an OEM Hitatchi 100gb 7200 RPM drive from newegg.com. I dont know the temps, b/c NHC wont run under Vista.

Oh, that's right on NHC. What about RMClock? I think it's supposed to run ...

How much is your fan running?

It's the hard drive running warmer.

I recently replaced my 5400 rpm hard drive that came with the T60 with a 7200 rpm and I've noticed the palm rest is warmer too. It's just because the faster speed generates more heat.

Nothing to be concerned about.

I figured as much. Then again, i was using a 7200 rpm drive in the machine before this one.....oh well. Worst case is the machine FRIES. :(

I don't think you'll fry the machine because of the hard drive.

I did notice you said you upgraded your CPU. When you did so, did you clean the HSF and reapply new heat transfer compound? If so what brand and how much?

Also is there a difference in fan assemblies? I ask because in the T40x series there is a long fan or a short fan. I don't know about the T60 series so this is purely for my own knowledge as I am looking at upgrading to a T60 in the next month or so.

T60p with upgraded CPU and VISTA running VERY HOT

I upgraded using Arctic Silver compund, and used very very little as instrcuted by the company. They said apply the thinnest layer or compound and spread it. Couldnt tell you about the fan, as i dont know.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is putting on too much thermal compound. If this is the first time you've done it, you should revisit how much you put on, and make sure you also distributed it evenly across the entire surface to make sure the heat transfer is optimal.

If you use too much thermal compound, the heat transfer won't be ideal and your cpu heatsink+fan won't be removing at much heat as it should.

T60p with upgraded CPU and VISTA running VERY HOT

I had read all about that. Even called Arctic Silver on the phone to discuss what " a small amount" meant. I assure you that i applied the least amount possible. I think i am just being overly picky when examining the T60p now that i did the CPU upgrade and Vista upgrade. Thanks.

It's particularly the GPU that gets hot with my Vista Thinkpad. ... even worse if I use a second monitor connected to the dockingstation's DVI port.

My laptop is very cool in Vista OS, better performance than XP OS, and the fan hardly starts running.

AlexanderT,

Did you add some AS5 to the GPU? Or just use the pad that is had?

Temetka, I've refrained from opening my new Thinkpad so far, so nope, haven't added any cooling paste to it.

The high temperature is not so much noticeable by a warm pad or anything, but only by reading the fan control information. Usually my GPU is between 55-65 celcius, which seems quite high to me. And I am not doing any heavy-duty graphic stuff (well, except for running Vista which requires some GFX power by itself).
