network help pls!

#1 Post by dorin » Wed Mar 07, 2007 4:06 am

hi to everyone,

so, my pb is that i cannot put the new laptop into be seen by the x40. they both share same router, both have internet, same dns, gateway, workgroup but i cannot make them see eachother, not even ping eachother.
they go on internet with no pb, but comunicating to eachother its impossible (router is set to allow communication between devices)

when i try to go into the workgroup it says on both comps i dont have enough priviledges. i use xp pro and xp home

any inputs would be more than apreciated,

It sounds like both "users" on each machine is running a limited account. Log off and sign back on as an administrator and see if that fixes the problem.

Do you have any firewall enabled?

Start/Settings/Control Panel/Windows Firewall

Check the Exceptions tab. Make sure File and Printer Sharing is checked.

I hate software firewalls, they always seem to interfere with even the most basic networking tasks. I made sure the wireless router I bought had its own hardware firewall. Don't have a problem with it and it does all the protecting with out putting a load on the cpu. This is great because I can use the Windows firewall to limit internet access to certain programs, and not have to buy something else that slows down my system (Norton anyone?). Just using the hardware firewall and the Windows one gives me all the protection I need. Anything more is just overkill.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.
