Just another time synchronization trick

#1 Post by teetee » Fri Mar 09, 2007 9:26 am

Target: Windows 2000 and people forget about March 11 is the date for day light saving change this year.

Ref. discussion:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=38263
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=32521

Goal: Setup automatic time synchronization between windows2000 computer and the ntp server(tick.mit.edu)

Ref. article:
http://www.beaglesoft.com/clwaw32time.htm#Windows_2000
" If the Windows 2000 clients belong to a workgroup -" section

Ref. parameters settings for the registry(from Microsoft TechNet):

My notes:
0. Make sure you have the correct time zone settings in the system.
1. Check
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W32Time\Parameters
in registry to make sure you have done things right (according to the above article)
2. Enable time(or Windows Time) service and make it automatically start so the system will synchronize the time automatically when it starts.
3. Be sure the UDP 123 is open all the way from your system to the ntp server. (settings on firewall, router, etc)

That way if you trust your ntp server enough(here again, tick.mit.edu), you can just set this up once and never have to worry about the system time-related problems(I think).

OK I think it doesn't help with the DST change because DST is totally for human beings. The ntp server only sends out UTC time and the ntp client(my computer) only do the time conversion based on my time zone settings. The computer doesn't know anything about when to do the DST change until the patch is applied.

Oh well. At least I learned something.

Me again. Here is the complete solution:
To apply the new DST change settings by using MS TZEdit:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/cp_dst

Then if you synchornize the time with ntp server, your time-related problems will be gone.(Now this time I am pretty sure of it.)
