vista on x60s

#1 Post by miri » Mon Mar 12, 2007 7:52 am

Hi guys,

I'm planning to install Vista on my X60s.
L2400
2GB Ram
100GB 7200rpm

I wanted to know if anyone has installed it successfully and is using it normally. I've read in here that there are some people who installed it and were not satisfied (...and went back to XP). What are your opinions?

How is the speed? Are all the components working normally?

Waiting for your answers,
Thanks,
Miri

Hi

I installed it on a X60 Tablet (which is based on a X60s) with roughly the same specs than your thinkpad.

It worked, the Windows Index-score-thing-i-can't-remember-the-exact-name was pretty decent (something like 3.8, ad the limiting factor was the integrated graphic.

Though, i went back to XP since Vista did not bring me any crucial feature/functionnality and took a lot more RAM than XP.

Most likely the memory usage is due to SuperFetch, which tries to do intelligent caching of the files you use most frequently in order to improve performance. You can turn it off -- but if you have the memory available, it's worth keeping turned on.

Thanks for the reply guys. I think that with 2GB's of memory it should be OK, to leave everything enabled by default :)

The comments/suggestions of any of you who are using vista right now on X60s (a similar config like mine) will be highly apprechiated.

Thanks,
Miri

I have vista ultimate running on my Wifes X60s 1704-69U with only a few minor issues (which I will be starting a different thread on). The battery life did decrease a little but other than that it runs well. I believe the vista index score is a 3.1.

I also upgraded the ram to 2gb but usually only see 700mb used at anytime and I have not disabled super-fetch so I don't know if it is not working properly or as the comp is new it might not have enough of a profile on what programs are run regularly?

Either way the system runs fairly well and I only have issues if I run dreamscene with 1080p content as the video, then the system has occasional shudders when opening menus :)

Hi guys,

Thanks for your suggestions. I installed Vista Ultimate without any problems.

Software update worked perfectly. It updated everything. Windows update was OK.

Just some small problems with Applications Compatibility but solved.

The only big problem was with Client Security Solution 8 which took 1 hour to figure out reading a topic on this forum.

The speed that vista operates it's better than XP (maybe because of 2GB of memory and a 7200rpm HDD)

Regards,
Miri
