MSN stuck as home page

#1 Post by madmaven » Mon Mar 19, 2007 9:38 pm

I have tried everything I can think of Of course I went to Tools options, and set google. com and as soon as I reboot it comes back with msn.com
I ran the windows defender and it found nothing, the machine runs great, not slow or anything actually has minimal use since a clean install of XP ran antivirus and nothing, I turned off system restore, cleaned out cookies, temp files, history, emptied perfetch, and still it comes back MSN. then I upgraded to IE7 in the hopes it would fix it now it is gomsn.com yada yada yada. I read the microsoft article about the general problem and went in the registry but the aritcle is impercise and says to delete a value but is vague on which value. I changed the URL value in registry to google but still no help.
I have no other ideas and have not seen this in articles, or forums, does anyone know of a fix for this annoying problem.???
thanks in advanceThis is on an A31 running XP Pro with all the updates and avast antivirus .

Do you have any malware/spyware/adware programs running? It sounds like there's a process that's running which prevents your home page from being changed (one of the most common things that malware will try to do).

Defender comes up clean every time I run it. I will probably put on avg antispy next tomorrow and test it with that . I do not see anything al all that could have hijacked it. and I dont think that there is any program similar to symantec that would be blocking the change as a protective measure.??

Check windows defender as it also will activly prohit any change of the startup homepage in ie. Go to quaratined items and look what defender actually is doing.

If you are using Access Connections, it has a home page setting that overrides what you put in the browser. ... JD Hurst

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR KNOWLEDGE!!!
Thank you so very much. I should have known! I have gotten in trouble with wifi with the access connections utility and deleted it off that machine. As soon as I uninstalled it I was ale to change the home page. I will remember that one.
