Vista update killed Password Manager

#1 Post by alecm3 » Wed Mar 21, 2007 4:48 am

I have a fingerprint sensor on T60. I found Thinkvantage password manager a handy feature, since I can just swipe my finger instead of typing passwords into websites.

Unfortunately, the latest Vista auto-update nuked it: now it asks me whether I want to store a password every time (i.e. does not remember passwords), and when I click on the password manager icon in the system tray, the window for it appears for 1 sec and then disappears. I updated "Client Security Solutions" from with lenovo update manager, but it did not change this behavior.

Did anybody else here experience this?

Mine's even worse. When I start the computer Client Security Solution asks me for my Windows password so that I can set it up, but it doesn't work, it tells me it can't enroll me. And yes, I do know for 100% sure that I'm typing my password in properly.

I have exactly the same issue as you marlinspike. I can't work out why this is. I can use the fingerprint to get through the bios/hd lock but when I get into windows login I get a message telling me to log in manually and then the message marlinspike reported, which always fails to enroll. If anyone has any ideas I'd be very interested! This wasn't a problem until i used the express upgrade disk to move from xp to vista.

Wait. Let's go step by step: Wich of your babies is doing that prank?
T60 must have full support for all those stuff in vista. T42 don't.

My T42 work in vista, I don't have password manager, and some other thinkvantage utilities, but it works. Fingerprinter reader works when login windows and so on. No password manager available with T42. Not supported yet.

Melvyn,

In my case it's the T60, I think that's the case with the other guys as well. I got it with XP pro preloaded and received one of the express Vista upgrade discs, which I installed and with the exception of the bios/hd password feature the fingerprint system has not worked properly since. The password manager feature is greyed out in the client security system, I get an error everytime I logon telling me I have to login to windows using password not fingerprint, and then I get a box asking for password to enroll me into the security system/password manager, which always fails. I'm just not really sure where to start, system update says everything is up to date, I've tried turning the security chip off and then back on again, no difference. Thanks for taking an interest!

It might have something to do with the TPM, specially if it was an upgrade from XP to Vista.

1) Shut down your thinkpad
2) Turn on your thinkpad and keep hitting the 'FN' key until you see the windows boot screen
3)Press 'F1' to go into bios
4)Go to 'security' then 'IBM Security Chip'
5)Now there should be an additional option that will let you clear the embedded security chip.
6)Save and exit bios

It might be esier todo the follwoing, rather than going into the BIOS: In the search box, look for tpm.msc, open, and you will be able to clean the tpm. Here's the link for further information. I hope this helps.
