Got my Vista disk

#1 Post by sorapp » Fri Mar 23, 2007 4:41 pm

I received my Windows Vista DVD via US mail. I took exactly 1 week from the ship date to be divered to me in Palm Beach, FL. It was in a padded brown soft shipping pouch with a styrofoam insert for protection. The disk was labeled "Lenovo" as if it came form them directly.

I was able to do a clean install in a new empty partition I prepared just for this purpose. I hid my Windows XP partiton so it would not see it. I assume it validates the install by verifying the product key. I now can boot to either Windows XP or Windows Vista. PS I use System Commander as my boot manager, I don't know if it offers a dual boot option like Windows XP.

The install offered several options including one for a 30 day free trial which I could choose by not entering the product key. If you choose the trial option they try to frighten you with warnings about losing you data etc., I tried this just for fun. All went smoothly and at the end it reminded me that I had 30 days to enter my product key. It even has a convenient place for you to enter it on the Start menu. By the way I didn't see any nags to enter the product key. The product key was on a label attached to the outside of the disk sleeve. I looks exactly like the one originally affixed to my system, with a different key.

After the install, which took about 30 minutes, I installed System Update ver. 3. Then I let System Update handle all the Lenovo patches etc.

The entire process was unbelievable smooth. I did not have a single problem. Everything works and there are no exclamation marks in Device Manager. I have a T60 with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Verizon wireless all buil-in. I also have a USB hard drive, docking station, external monitor and wirelss keyboard and mouse.

I went to other vendor sites for updates and again no problem. I even installed the Vista upgrade for Norton Internet Security with no problem, Norton is never easy for me.

I know this must sound like a sales pitch but I assure you I have never had such an easy install, When I upgraded to Windows XP, it took me a month of chasing drivers and tech support to get it to work.

Anyone has any questions, please ask. I'll try to answer as best I can.

Happy computing.

It's always good to hear "good news" here as opposed to the "other" stuff. Glad your vista install went smooth, I am really digging Vista Business a lot hope you do too. :)

Hi, Sorapp

Happy to know that your system is working well in dual boot.
I plan to do the same once I get my 160 GB hard drive from newegg.com.

Are there any obvious or serious issues if I try to have dual boot with XP Pro 32-bit and Vista Business 64-bit ?

The only thing I can think of is to be sure that the Windows XP partition is hidden so Vista doesn't try to do an "upgrade". I did have to re-enable System Commander after the install because Vista wiped it out, but is was still there just not enabled.

I can't comment on 64 bit install since mine was 32 bit. I assume it would be the same as long as you have a 64 bit capable processor.

Sorapp is this Vcom software? I've been using Partition Commander for a couple years and find it very useful and versitile.

@ sorapp

How much memory are you using in your T60?
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

Yes it is Vcomm, however I have never used Partition Commander. I am a fan of Partition Magic.

Do you mind telling us which drive you bought from newegg.com? The maufacturer, RPM, the price, etc. I assume the shock mount will nicely fit onto the drive.

Its a Seagate Momentus 5400.3, 160GB, 5400 rpm for 145$. A bit pricey compared to one from Hitachi with same speed and size.
