Help with t42 2378-FVU device

#1 Post by puco » Mon Sep 27, 2004 9:14 am

can someone help me with a Unkonwn device. I tried to install all drivers from IBM, unfortunately none of them was for the Unkonwn device. I'll bet it's an unused, but available, port in your TP, it maybe internal or external. Until something is plugged into it, it will remain in an unknown state. You could ignore it or right-click it in Device Manager and select to Disable it (a red X will be seen).

I did a clean install on my notebook and I had no issues with unknown device after installing all the drivers using Thinkpad software installer.
Did you install all the drivers using Thinkpad installer? May it can tell you what is missing.

Under Windows XP SP2, on a 2897-54U (R40) that device, "IBM0068", is the IBM PM Device...

Code: Select all

DEVICEID: IBM0068
DISPNAME: IBM PM Device
INSTANCE: ACPI\IBM0068\5&2890D699&0
PROVIDER: IBM
DRIVER DATE: 11/5/2004
FNAME: IBM ThinkPad Power Management Driver
VERSION: 1.30 1YKU08WW
INF: Ibmpmdrv.inf
DRIVERS:
               C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\ibmpmdrv.sys
               C:\WINDOWS\system32\ibmpmsvc.exe
               C:\WINDOWS\system32\tpinspm.dll
Which is odd, as there's already one IBM PM Device installed when you install the PM Drivers. I just installed 2k3 last night, so I haven't had a lot of time to investigate this further.

I am not posting this from my T42, but I think this is your chipset driver, so you may want to try and install the drivers. It offers some extra ACPI readers etc.

Problem Solved!

#7 Post by kugeln » Thu Jun 16, 2005 7:38 pm

Here goes...

Device IBM0068 is the IBM PM Device that uses the IBM PM Driver package.
Device IBM0071 is the IBM IrDA Fast Infrared port. It is *not* supported by default on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise edition.

For some reason WS2K3 Ent. installs IBM0071 as the IBM PM Device, and then IBM0068 can't install or start because the drivers and system service are already in use.

To fix these problems, *remove* the IBM PM Device that's installed (the one with the Device ID IBM0071). Manually install the IBM PM Device drivers for the unknown device (with Device ID IBM0068). Reboot.

Now, since WS2K3 Enterprise doesn't have the files and reg. entries for IrDA, you have to get them from the link in the last post here: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread24513-1.html#148016

Then just follow the instructions on that post. It works (no more unknown device, at least, no IrDA devices to test it with) on my R40. YMMV.

the nsc thing is the security chip, if you install client security you will get drivers for it. if you done need it you can disable the chip in bios

ACPI - Advance Configuration and Power Interface

#10 Post by b1aze5 » Mon Nov 28, 2005 3:50 pm

I have the same problem with this unknown device in my Thinkpad T22, after reading this topic I went in my device manager and deleted my "ibm thinkpad fast infrared port" under my infrared devices and the unknown device. Then I reboot the system -- the system detected 2 unknown devices, then system installed the infrared, then the system ask me for the other unknown device (now this is the ACPI) -- I went to automatic install driver and my system went online and installed the device driver.

UNKNOWN DEVICE FIXED!
