Not necessarily, looks more like Messenger Service spam. A properly configured firewall should be able to stop it. This url may also be able to help: http://www.grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm

Hi
i didn't load anything yet but l will load avast until l decide what to buy.
I want to be able to buy something that l can load into two different computers at the same time.
Would l be better off to delete everything and start all over again only this time loading avast first.
Thanks
Alan

If you mean reload the operating system and starting from scratch, yes, the first thing you need to do after the reinstall (if you have SP2) is go to the MS website download your updates, to include windows defender, then go to a website of your choice and download your Anti Virus software.
Then start tweaking your system however you want.

Personally I don't waste time trying to get rid of spyware or malware, virus's or trojans anymore, I don't get them. If friends give me thier infected computers, they give me the recovery CD's or I charge them for an XP license.
If you want to, go for it. IF you have just installed your OS and would rather spend the time removing whatever you have picked up then go for it. In the end the amount of time spent trying to remove whatever it is you have will be longer, however, you know if you start from scratch your problem will be completely gone.
Probably one of the biggest mistakes is connecting to the internet via AOL with no protection.
It's entirely up to you. This is just my experience and opinion.
If you choose to try and remove your invaders, search the forum for advice as there are a lot who have come before you and a wealth of information on Virus/Spyware removal.

My defensive plan goes like this...
Install XP, SP1
Run the SP2 pack
Set Windows update to "download and notify"
Download and install AVG free, but don't scan...yet
Install Windows updates, restart machine.
Download SpyBot and install, again, no scan...yet.
The second round of Windows updates usually has about 70 patches. After installing them, and restarting, I run AVG scan. Depending on the HDD size, it can take about an hour.
After AVG scan, restart and run Spybot scan.
Done.
Surf with your head. That's probably the biggest factor in avoiding trouble.
I scan with AVG and Spybot once a month, and have not had issues. Between my Routers' firewall and Windows Firewall, I have never had a problem.
I also have a computer outside my firewall for P2P, and that gets the same programming with ZoneAlarm and Peer Guardian for protection. Nothing on it but the P2P, so no major loss if it gets infected. In the last year or so, I've not had issues with that PC either.

Common sense to some of us is unfortunately the higher education others strive to attain.
Click on Messenger Service popups for more information. I had the same problem a few years ago with my desktop. You do not have a virus or malware.kingman99 wrote:Thanks, lwill try it on Monday when l get back to my office.
