You can get Multilingual User Interface...inquire with Microsoft (usually a corporate purchase) or send me an IM about this.

control panel -> Regional and Language options -> Languages
You can install a few different chinese input system. After that you can write chinese in word, notepad, etc. Any program that works in unicode.

But some programs you still need something like NJStar to display the chinese. One example is ICQ.

The Multilingual User Interface will make your whole Windows XP appear as if it's Chinese....all of...menu's, etc. Almost like you have Chinese version of WinXP from the beginning. A few clicks of the mouse and you have English windows back!

The MUI packs are licensed very differently than the standard WinXP single user license.

There are certain sets of languages that are "free" to install on your copy of XP depending on what the original language is. For an English XP Pro license Chinese Traditional is not one of the "free" ones.

Totally depends on your licenseing agreement with MSFT.

A standard agreement with MSFT does not allow for running the multi-lang version of the OS.

Speaking about Chinese, anyone knows how to fix this problem.

You run NJStar first and then IE, then you load a Chinese/Japanese/Korean site, IE crashes with mlang.dll.

If you run IE then goto the site and then run NJStar, you can browse fine in that window without crashing.

Just curious...why use NJSTAR when Microsoft IME is available...and for free?

Sorry, I just read about ICQ and other Unicodes that don't display chinese, japanese, etc. unless you run NJSTAR or some other similar program.

If the client just wants to read and write Chinese in an English XP system.
Here is my way:
I am using a linux machine, so I can not give out exact steps. If you find this helpful; I will post the method later by using a windows XP machine.
First you have to install an Asian language package which comes with the install CD or in i386 file of you thinkpad. It is not that hard to find this option from control panel->language & regions(I cannot remember the full name, in a classic view)
When finishing the installation, change the languate to Chinese simplified or Chinese traditional (depend on the client's preference), change the location to China.
There is one last place you have to change to China. I can not point out now.
I will post it later
After these steps, your client can read, write(choose appropriate input methods) and install and use Chinese version softwares in an Enlish environment.

1. control panel(classic view)->Regional and Language options->Language Tap
Under Supplemental language support, check ''install files for East Asian languages''
Apply and OK, if it is thinkpad with i386 file, it should copy the files automatically and install them. may reboot your computer
Now client can read the Chinese documents and web pages;

2. After the installation, renter the Regional and language options- Advanced tap
under Language for non-Unicode programs, select an appropriate option for your client Chinese(PRC) or Chinese(Taiwan)

3. (optional) control panel-> Regional and language options-> Regional Options tap
under "Standards and formats"->select Chinese(PRC) or Chinese(taiwan) or other terms

under "location"
choose "China"

4. Languates tap
under "Text services and input languages"
click details
add Chinese input language you like.

Now the client should be able to read, write Chinese documents and use Chinese version software.

Now the client can

IME is harder to use and also doesn't have the different input methods available like Cantonese input.
