Bitlocker Setup
Bitlocker Setup
Right now I am trying to get Bitlocker working with my T43 - 2687-D3U but it seems to be giving me some problems:
1. It says my system isnt formatted correctly. That is my 1ts partition in NTFS which is fine but my 2nd Partition (IBM_SERVICE) is FAT32.
My question is can I just copy everything on that partition and reformat it to NTFS and copy everything back without any problems?
2nd, is that it says "a TPM was not found. A TPM is required to turn on Bitlocker. " and tells me to contact manufacturer for a bitlocker-compatible bios? Does IBM have these available?

It is detecting the PDA. I recommend backing up first, and make your recovery cds if you haven't. You need to create another partition of up to 5 GB (i think) for a work area for bitlocker to encrypt your complete volume. You may need to turn the TPM on in the BIOS if it isn't on. Typically it isn't enabled from the factory.
I don't think that when using Bitlocker, that the current version of R&R will work...

You need to create 1.5 GB primary partition.

Is Bitlocker better than the Thinkpad Trusted Platform Management controller already on the T4x's?
I'm already using the Thinkpad's TPM, is it recommended that I use Bitlocker as well? I would assume the IBM TPM chip is a better/faster solution since it seems to be hardware based; whereas the Vista Bitlocker appears to be only software.

BitLocker will use TPM module to encrypt system volume on your HDD. Everything is stored on this volume will be well protected if laptop is stollen. The trick is not to forget your pin or at least not to loose your key or your data is lost. For that you create a copy of your key and put it in the safe place (which is not yor computer bag
)
IBM Client Security simply helps you organize your passwords. If your laptop is stollen, one can take HDD out of your system and get everything that is not properly encrypted out of it.
I use both bitlocker and client security. I did not notice any performace hit after bitlocker was enabled so I’m keeping it...

Though I've got no first hand experience with BitLocker... about the pin...
Over at on10.net (Channel 10, a MS owned video blog) they had a segment on BitLocker and I guess while setting it up it will give you the option to store your pin on MS servers, and it will be tied to your live id. So if you were to ever forget your pin you could log in and download something to regain access to the drive.
But yeah, definitely do not just write the pin down and stick it in your computer desk. If you absolutely must write it down, make sure it is stuck somewhere safe.
