Want Vista Business 64-bit DVD

#1 Post by chaukap » Wed Apr 04, 2007 7:41 am

Hi,

I have a 32-bit Vista Business DVD from Lenovo (from Moduslink). I want to install a 64-bit version on my Thinkpad while using the 32-bit key. However, I am not able to get the media for it. Microsoft says they cannot give me one as my vista version is OEM. Lenovo says they dont give or support 64-bit versions of vista. Finally, I found media available on CDW but they wont sell it to me as it is only for open licencse customers.

Does anyone have a idea how can I get a 64-bit installation media? or Can anyone send me one (if it does not violate any licensing agreements) ? I will pay for all the costs involved.

Thanks,

I would recommend not upgrading to the x64 version unless you have to. Not until MSs next OS release will they fully switch to 64, and not until then will they have come close to working the bugs out.

I have Vista Upgrade (Ultimate). I can burn you a copy of the 64-bit disc.

Your CD key determines what version is to be installed. So it should work fine for you.

Thanks a lot 'Asbradley21' and 'Temetka'

I totally gave up on 64-bit but now I have two offers. This forum rocks.

If either one of you can send me your mailing address, I will send you a prepaid DVD envelope with a blank DVD. Does that work ?

Please, send me a email at chaukap@iit.edu

Thanks again.

FYI: I have a copy of x64 Business that I got through this site.

I got it a week before the 32bit copy that Moduslink sent out. Also, I'm using the Moduslink's CD Key w/ the CD.

I have tried that site and it wont accept the product key I got with my moduslink DVD. Microsoft says that they only send out 64-bit versions if you bought a 'retail' 32-bit version.

Good to know that the moduslink key works with 64-bit.[/quote]

I want to say that microsoft ships both x86 and x64 versions of vista with all the different OS versions (business, home, etc.) on the same DVD... It's all a matter of the CD key you give them that determines the functionality you get. I don't think there's a special x64 dvd...

You are incorrect.

There are 32-bit and 64-bit DVD's. The serial # determines which version (Home Premium, Business, Ultimate) is going to be installed.

I agree with Temetka. You need a different DVD to install 64-bit version. The retail box for Vista Ultimate comes with two DVDs, one for 32-bit and one for 64-bit.

Chaukap, your DVD apears to be run over by a truck, the envolope it was sent in has this giant black tire track all along it. The disc inside was destroyed. I am just going to use one I've got. bo worries.

Hey there!
my thinkpad was out of commision and I had yet to find the time to fix it. The battery had completely depleted and it would no longer charge, as the power port had cracked in 2. Well, I spent over 100$ on a new battery and even more on other repairs. I finally installed Ubuntu Linux and its running smooth as ever. Hows everthing been for you?

Good :) , finally got a high end t60 and am currently dual booting XP/Vista Business, great deal. The release version is so much better than the beta. And of course I'm still happy with OSX, runs great on the t60 :)

Thanks a lot. I am sorry couldnt get back to you immediately while travelling. Sorry about the broken DVD, I dont understand how did that happen. You think you can trust the guys at local UPS store but I guess not,, atleast on packaging (they were fast though).
Thanks again for all the help and sorry for the inconvenience.
