VISTA ULTIMATE...not available on T60. Why?

#1 Post by stephenaron » Sat Apr 07, 2007 3:36 pm

I know the answer is somewhere on the board, but i didnt find it. Why doesnt IBM offer the T60 with ultimate? I installed a retail version of it, but am wondering why there isnt one sold that way from IBM. Thoughts?

So far as I know, Lenovo says:
Lenovo recommends Windows Vista™ Business for business computing.
Lenovo recommends Windows Vista™ Home Premium for personal computing.
"I've come a long, long way," she said, "and I will go as far,
With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
The man who took her off her steed, and stood her to a beer,
Were a bleary-eyed Surveyor and a DRUNKEN ENGINEER.

well in a sense ultimate kinda has alot of useless stuff.... i have ran ultimate and premium on my t43, even though i kept ultimate on it I still say premium would be the way to go(my take on the subject). Ultimate has a few perks like the extras ,dreamscene(batt/cpu hogg) and bit locker.....but after i looked at all the stuff in ultimate i basically stripped all the ultimate services to keep things zippy.

My guess would be that they had the same idea and just offer business/premium to keep the price respective because some ppl wouldnt like spending extra $$ for stuff they wont use?

I believe ultimate is overkill for a business type machine more of a gamers paradise with around a 5.0 experience rating type machine.

I run on ultimate on my T41P.

It has media center - this is a bonus, but is not required
It can connect to domains - This is required
It has built in DVD decoding - this is a bonus, but is not required
It runs fast enough for me - this is required

Vista is how things will be in the next few years. I intend to get used to the new way now. I am actually starting to prefer it over XP now.

Oh and Aero looks freakin' awesome and makes my T41P look all that much more fantastic, nay, futuristic.

And dont forget, Business cannot play DVD natively. WMP 11 in Vista Business does not have MPEG-2 codec installed.
If you try to play the DVD then it will try to connect to internet and Vista will lead you to MS page showing that you should buy the codec.

As long as "Multimedia Center For Think Offering" have not been released for Vista, for Business user better to look for free codec available on the internet. WMP Classic (free player) runs fine with it.
For Home Premium and Ultimate, the WMP11 have more codecs installed.

And Vista Business have empty folder for Games whereas the Home Premium and Ultimate have some games in it.

I think for regular user it is better to choose Home Premium than Business. But of course this is not an option since Lenovo choose Business to be preinstalled in every Thinkpad.

Rightly so. They sell business laptops, therefore they should come with a business caliber OS.

You can buy an 'anytime upgrade' to Ultimate. There is no need for reeinstalling the complete machine.

Through "anytime upgrade" microsoft can earn a little more money online, it is possible that your local friendly IBM/Lenovo/Notebook/PC dealer can offer it cheaper than paying MS online. It doesn't hurt to ask
