Enhance font display by activating windows cleartype

#1 Post by propellen » Mon Apr 09, 2007 5:03 am

You can significantly enhance the font display by opera by activating the cleartype font in windows. ClearType enhances your display by smoothing the edges of screen fonts. ClearType works especially well on Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) devices, including flat screen monitors and laptop computers. But the improvement in standard CRT monitor is also clearly noticeable.

Here is how to activate cleartype font in wondows xp:

1.Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Display.(Alternately, right click on desktop>appearance>).
2.On the Appearance tab, click Effects.
3.Click to select the Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts check box, and then click ClearType in the list.

I always turn off Cleartype because I get sharper text without it.

I use Cleartype *and* the tuner. I found that the most recent Intel Video driver (Microsoft, not IBM) made the text even clearer.

I have Windows 2000 virtual machines that cannot use Cleartype, so I really appreciate Cleartype on my XP machines.

Hi,

Just an little update.
I recently kept getting head aches, and it turns out that it was due to using cleartype.
Hehe, sorry guys for recommending something that could do you some "harm".

Properly installed, Clear Type is crisp and more contiguous than the pixelated look of Windows 2000 text and earlier. As I type, this text is perfectly clear with no graininess. That is, it looks more like a book or newsprint. So I don't think such a look would give normal eyes a headache. I have been using Clear Type for years, need and use reading glasses, and have no headaches at all. I think there must be something else at play for you (bad settings, need for glasses, etc). ... Some people indeed complain about headaches due to Cleartype. I myself cannot decide whether I like it better with or without.

I think it looks better when DPI is lower and text is larger, and vice versa. When text is small, it's not needed, and can actually make it blurry, which may cause headaches.

I just pulled up an arbitrary Word document of mine (Times Roman 12 point - as are all my documents). I changed a paragraph to 8 point (too small to be useful). With Clear Type it is workable; with Standard text, the 8-point is about the same. The 12-point is grainy and as things used to be.

On one hand, I speak only for myself. On the other hand, I can't believe how much I am tied to Clear Type.

One thing I don't understand completely, is that there was a time when Clear Type had some mild fuziness. Ever since IE7, though, Clear Type has become wonderfully clear, crisp and precise on both my Desktop (NEC LCD Monitor) and my T41. ... JDH

When Microsoft developed Vista, they also redid clear type. Those changes made their way into IE7, so that is why it looks better in IE7 than everywhere else in XP. Vista's clear type is a vast improvement over clear type in Windows XP.

I do not use clear type on any of my computers, but now that I have found this tuner (thanks guys!), I might try to see how good it looks on my T21.
