Win98 USB driver question

#1 Post by oldgrandpainmi » Wed Apr 18, 2007 1:27 pm

Hey all,

Although this might not belong here, I'm sorry if I've screwed up.

I am in need of some help

My son has come home with a desktop with Win98 on it (I don't think it is Second Edition). He and I want to copy a couple files off of it before we wipe the drive. What I want to do is to copy the files to a USB flash memory I use. The problem is that although Win98 see's the memory, it wants to know where to download the driver, which I don't have. It is a Geek Squad, 1gb, memory. Geek Squad wants the model number to help me, but I currently don't have it.

My question is: Is there a generic program I can download from somewhere, that will allow Win98 to use this memory? I went to Microsoft and tried to use one of their's, but this Win98 doesn't like it, thus errors. (The program was the wrong one for the revision level we have.)

Firstly, you can find out whether or not you have second edition or not by looking at the system properties, (r click my computer and l click properties).
Secondly, if you know the manufacturer of the USB stick you can visit their website and look if they offer a driver for win98.

If you have Win98 SE, this should work:

Otherwise, like andyP suggested, you may need to get the drivers from the manufacturer.

You may also want to check the BIOS, to see if Legacy-USB is active/On, if the BIOS offers that option.
AFAIK only W98se supports USB.

USB support started with WIN95 (although it was pretty limited). WIN98 (as well as WIN98SE) should support it, too.

I have seen a desktop recently with Win98 and a USB connection. Most everything we attached did not work. The manufacturers for the attached devices had no Win98 USB drivers listed only Win98SE drivers. So IMHO there is very limited Win98 USB support.

Thanks

Meant to start a new thread and didn't see a way to delete this.
