Computer does not turn off after shutdown

#1 Post by Stargate199 » Sun Apr 22, 2007 8:33 am

I just installed Vista on my computer at home. This computer is a Pentium 4 2.2Ghz (not listed in my sig). Vista runs great untill I shutdown the computer. I use shutdown instead of sleep because XP is still on the machine and it has all of my programs installed. Anyway, when I shut it down, I get all of the normal shutdown screens. After the shutdown screen fades away, my screen goes blank, but my computer stays on. Both the power LED and the HDD LED are on. Anyone know how to fix this?

Here is some more information. I updated my graphics card driver (Radeon 9600) and no luck. The computer will not shut down in safe mode and the computer will not hibernate. The computer will reboot so I can safely shut down Vista by rebooting, boot into XP and shut it down from there. I believe that the hard drive does turn off, but can't tell because the fans make a lot more noise than the hard drive. I believe it has something to do with ACPI driver so I will reinstall that and see what happens.

It's most likely an ACPI issue; however, considering that the pentium 4 2.2 was introduced in 2002 it is also possible that your pc needs to be updated to the latest bios to fully support acpi. Vista only supports computers with acpi.

Unfortunately there is no BIOS update available, and I did reinstall ACPI driver. The computer supports it (since it uses the driver in XP). Still, it will not turn off after the shut down.

Okay, I reinstalled Vista again, and guess what, IT SHUTDOWN!!!!!! :P . Then it installed all of the updates and went back to what it did before :flame: :banghead: . So I am guessing that it is a windows update that is the cause of my problem here. Just going to do another install, but not have it do automatic updates.
