Having trouble using certain applets on web-pages...

#1 Post by Biggie2 » Sun Oct 03, 2004 8:14 pm

I am having trouble using many applets on certain websites, expecially those that help me download something. I am just not sure what utility i am missing that will make these applets accessible. All of my Email sites from hotmail.com to comcast.net will not work, as well as Windows Update and my HP product updates also will not work. Certain websites will not work at all as well.

Did i accidentally delete something somehow like a Java Utility or something, i dunno?? Any Ideas guys??

It's not likely a Java thing. Could you post some details of at least one error (say the Windows Update error). SP2 had some issues with Update if you loaded SP2. It also turns on a default firewall, and monkeys with other security settings. But without some detail, it is hard to tell. ... JDHurst

Sure thing...

[Error number: 0x80096001]

Thats the windows error... im still running SP1 due to the fact that i have had this problem since before windows prompted me to upgrade.

Looked on the windows site for some help as they do have a fairly decent FAQ and other helpful problem fixing tools, but neverless, nothing talked of this particular error number and the problem remains unsolved.

When i try to use hotmail.com i get the "The page cannot be displayed" and Cannot find server... as if its bad browser settings, but i havent changed anything to make my browser settings or any firewall to have a problem.

Comcast.net brings me to the same cannot find server page...

I have a feelings its something with my IE settings, but like i said i didnt change anything, and i can seem to locate any sort of problem...

I had a similar odd problem and the solution doesn't make sense either, but here goes:

I shut off my desktop, and then restarted with a data floppy in the drive. You know, "system not found, press any key to continue ... When I tried to use IE after the successful boot, I got Server Location errors like you described. None of my "Favorite Places" would load (well, I only tried about 10).

I then shut down the computer (Restart) with the data floppy out of the drive, and everything worked great.

Logic? Nah!!!

But it's worth a try.

Hope this helps.
