where to get dvd decoder
where to get dvd decoder
Hi!
I am running Windows Vista on a new X60 tablet.
I reset the machine to factory state, but disabled all of the software that comes preinstalled (which - I think - was a good choice).
However, my Windows media player is reluctant to play DVDs now, saying that no DVD devoder is installed.
Now, I know I can purchase one for 15 bucks off the microsoft website - but I thought maybe I don't need to.
Should such a decoder come with the system, if yes, can I download it somewhere (I searched lenovo.com, but had no luck), or are free version available.
Any pointers (specific URLs would be GREAT!) are much appreciated!

Go with the Combined Community Codec Pack. http://www.cccp-project.net/. It has direct show filters for nearly all possible codecs out there and is pretty stable. With it you will be able to play everything inside wm-player.
I have CCCP but I still can't play DVDs in Windows Media Player.arni wrote:Go with the Combined Community Codec Pack. http://www.cccp-project.net/. It has direct show filters for nearly all possible codecs out there and is pretty stable. With it you will be able to play everything inside wm-player.

Maybe you have a copy protected dvd. For that you will need to go with cccp and Anydvd http://www.slysoft.com to enable it.
I think cccp and all the other codec-packs only work with non-protected discs.

Sorry... I have to correct you. OEM's ship Vista Business with the Codec installed as part of their preload. They are free to bundle something else if they choose. Lenovo builds that codec into their preload of Vista Business but does not give you the ability to download it, or extract it for a native install of Vista.sapibobo wrote:Correction. Vista Business does not have codec to play MPEG2 movies (DVD movies). The codec have to be bought from Microsoft.
The codecs available and installed at Home Premium and Ultimate.
Both of you are correct - Vista Business pre-loaded from Lenovo supposedly can play DVDs. However, once you do a clean install, you will no longer be able to play DVDs natively through Media Player and will require a codec purchase through M$.
I know because I went through this pain after doing a clean install of Vista Business. Even after downloading the various codec packs available online, Media Player was still unable to play DVDs - however, VLC and other media players bundled with the codec packs were able to play the DVDs.
Good luck!
