Updated Intel Matrix Storage driver released for Vista

#1 Post by giulio.vezzelli » Wed May 09, 2007 5:12 am

I suggest Vista users who have SATA based Thinkpads to install the newly released Intel Matrix Storage driver.

Release date is 2007/05/08 (yesterday...!).

Link : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 62909.html

Regards.

PS: This driver is useful only if you set "AHCI mode" for the IDE controller in BIOS settings.

Since i installed Vista on myt60p with "compatability" set in the bios, i cant change the setting to AHCI now, correct? When i do, i get the BSOD. Supposedly you need to have it set before installing Vista.

Under the previous driver, I think I remember about a 10% performance penalty for AHCI. Does anyone want to compare the performance specs under AHCI and in compatibility mode? (If you originally installed Vista with AHCI, you should be able to switch between the settings in the BIOS without problem). I'm using compatibility mode, otherwise I would do it.

FYI, here's a disk performance tool: Sandra Lite: http://www.sisoftware.net/index.html?di ... angx=en&a=

I installed the new matrix drive and it deactivated my windows install. I had to call microsoft to re-activate it. that was fun.

Sometimes you have to just say "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

I suggest you only do this if you really really really need to.

Advanced Host Controller Interface (for Serial ATA drives).

From Intel: "Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is an interface specification that allows the storage driver to enable advanced Serial ATA features such as Native Command Queuing and hot plug."

I read somewhere that NCQ wasn't available on thinkpad drives, thus defeating the purpose of AHCI... anyone confirm this?
