The recovery discs that were provided with my new (used) thinkpad are, uh, somewhat interesting.
Booting from the first disc loads up a menu where one can choose what kind of drivers to load (USB, dock/ultrabase, etc) and then a menu that is in Chinese appears.
Through trial and error I figured out that the first option is to start the OS reinstallation process and the others are related to PC Doctor... I actually tried the OS recovery and a Chinese edition of Windows XP Pro SP1 is installed with all of the associated thinkpad apps in Chinese as well.
It was fun trying to navigate the OS just from memorization but the novelty wore off pretty quickly Wink
At any rate, it would be great if I could avoid calling up Lenovo for a set of English recovery discs for my X31. Is there a way to change the language of these discs by modifying some file(s) somewhere?
Recovery Disc Language Conversion?
Re: Recovery Disc Language Conversion?
From reading other posts here dealing with language issues on recovery disks, I believe the answer is "no, you cannot change the language."Subliming wrote:The recovery discs that were provided with my new (used) thinkpad are, uh, somewhat interesting.

If your laptop is still in warranty, you can probably get a free set from Lenovo by explaining your situation. If not, there are forum members (including myself) who could help you out.
All of this assumes, of course, that your laptop has a Windows XP license (COA) and that you are entitled to install XP from recovery disks.

According to the warranty lookup on lenovo.com the warranty expires 2008-04-09 and "This product has a special bid three year limited warranty. This product is entitled to parts, labor and on-site repair service (9x5 next business day) in approved locations. Thinkpad batteries have a one year warranty."
I'll give 'em a call!
