Weird but aggravating and potentially satisfying project...

#1 Post by proFeign » Sun May 27, 2007 11:31 pm

I would very much like to replace the picture of the finger swipe thing with a picture of a middle finger. The image I'm talking about is this one (just the little part with the finger and scanner on the left, not the whole image):

Image

it's called "b-swipe.png" and it's located in the

c:\program files\thinkvantage fingerprint\rsc

folder. i replaced it with a "middle finger cursor" png of the same dimensions and it still doesn't make it go away. oddly, it appears whe i want to enroll a new fingerprint but in the BIOS fingerprint prompt and the windows one it stays its old self. i can't find another image in png or any other format that looks like it. anybody know where the other version of this image is located?

Thanks,

Kelly

It's probably also embedded in the .EXE program file, which is used for registering fingerprints.

If the BIOS displays an image, it will not be replaceable. The BIOS is not capable of reading files from FAT32 or NTFS partitions; instead, the image will have to be embedded within the BIOS.

As for Windows ... it is likely using a different DLL. I believe that the file in question for ThinkPad client security is QCONGINA.DLL, and lives somewhere inside Windows\System32. Modify this file at your own risk as it could prevent you from logging onto Windows!

Thanks for the suggestions. I might be brave enough to edit the DLL but not an exe. I don't seem to have that DLL though. Anything else it might be called or where I might find out normall what this DLL would be called?

You can look in the registry key as described here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/164486

There is more info about GINA here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphical_ ... entication

Do be careful -- as I said earlier, a corrupt GINA DLL may well prevent you from being able to log onto your ThinkPad.

I'm aware of the risks, actually, but thanks for the warnings. If it's not an easy change I'm going to leave it alone. Also I hope that, if I do an something gets screwed up I can use BartPE or safemode to replace the original file. Also I'm guessing that if it's an IBM thing that fails I can still get to the XP pw login prompt. but i won't hold anyone responsible except my own self :)
