Vista upgrade problem

#1 Post by Toine » Wed Jun 13, 2007 6:06 am

I just got this great T42p from the forum, and it came with the Vista upgrade dvd.

When I try to install it, i get the message that the key is not valid. But I use the original key. Can anyone help me with this. (maybe this is a stupid problem, but okay :D )

PS: I tried it in XP and Booting it directly.

If this was a Vista upgrade DVD from Lenovo, have you tried contacting them?

IMO it won't work. The person who sold you this T42p probably got the disk with his/her T60/p from Moduslink but these upgrade dvd's are specifically made to work only on the original machines they're meant for.

If it's anything like the upgrade disc I got (probably the same exact thing), you can skip activation during installation...

Then you can figure things out on your own.

That's (was) my T42p. If I remember correctly, the way you do the Vista install with an upgrade DVD is to boot into Windows XP, then insert the Vista DVD and the Autorun will start the install. At the point it asks for the key, it now knows you are doing an upgrade (the key you have is an upgrade key, not a full install key). My interpretation of this process is that the upgrade needs to know you are upgrading from a prior Windows install and this is the way it checks (doesn't ask for an original installation disk like Office products).

Bypassing the activation key as has been suggested works also, but I didn't know about that at the time I did my upgrade. I would be curious if the activation works okay once up an running.

Well, even if you make it work somehow, but technically that would be illegal to do. The DVD was meant for the system the upgrade was eligible for.

The upgrade he has is a retail purchased copy - it is not part of any preinstall or OEM package.

Pretty sure rye is right you can bypass the activation for a while but eventuall you should have to activate at some time or another, there is a link back in this conference to the Vista tweak guide that explains the activation process, you can skip the activation for a while but eventually you may have to activate. Maybe i'm wrong on this. but the product key is an important part of the install * in the legal sense* there is some workarounds but eventually activation may be necessary.
